Gears of War: E-Day May Have Xbox's First Platinum Achievement

Xbox has been building toward a PlayStation-style Platinum achievement for a while now, and Gears of War: E-Day might be the game that actually kicks it off. The full achievement list for The Coalition's upcoming prequel dropped via Xbox Wire this week, and buried in that list is something worth paying attention to.

The achievement that gives away the plan

The list includes an achievement called The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day. Its description marks it as earned by collecting every other achievement in the game, and it awards zero Gamerscore. That combination, a catch-all completion reward with no point value attached, maps almost exactly to how PlayStation handles its Platinum trophies.

Here's the thing: Xbox head Asha Sharma confirmed earlier this year that the platform was actively developing a Platinum equivalent for Xbox achievements. The feature hasn't launched yet, but when it does, games would presumably need an achievement already structured this way to support it. E-Day has that structure in place right now.

Whether that's intentional design ahead of the feature rollout, or a holdover from the period when E-Day was expected to release on PlayStation 5, is genuinely unclear. There was widespread expectation that the game would follow Gears of War: Reloaded onto Sony's platform, before Microsoft pulled back from that approach. A trophy-ready achievement structure would make sense if a PS5 version was ever seriously considered.

What 'Dead Serious' actually requires

For anyone planning to chase that completion achievement, the hardest unlock in the list tells you everything about the commitment involved. Dead Serious, the game's toughest challenge, requires completing the story on Insane difficulty at 100%, accumulating 25,000 kills in versus mode, reaching the maximum profile level, and maxing out all four classes. Previous Gears titles had a similarly named achievement called Seriously, so the tradition continues.

That's not a casual weekend unlock. The 25,000 versus kills alone will take most players hundreds of hours, which means The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day is going to sit unclaimed for a long time for the majority of players who attempt it.

The 'first' question has a catch

Whether E-Day actually ends up being the first Xbox game with a Platinum-equivalent achievement depends on timing. Several other Xbox titles are releasing before October 6, and most of them haven't had their achievement lists published yet. Any of those games could include a similar structure, and if the Platinum feature goes live before E-Day ships, another title might technically claim the first spot.

What most players miss in this conversation is that the Platinum-style achievement isn't entirely new territory on Xbox. A handful of games have previously included achievements for completing all others, but those existed without any official platform-level recognition or distinct reward tier. The difference now is that Xbox is building a formal system around it, which would retroactively or prospectively turn these catch-all achievements into something that actually means something on your profile.

The timing of that feature launch relative to E-Day's October 6 release is the key here. If Xbox rolls out the Platinum system before the game ships, E-Day could launch as the first title where the feature is live and functional from day one.

Getting ready for October 6

E-Day is shaping up as one of Xbox's biggest releases before the year closes out. If you want to get ahead of the achievement grind, the Gears of War: E-Day beta guide covering dates, times, and what to expect is a solid starting point for understanding what the game asks of you before launch. There are also beta rewards to unlock before the game releases, so time spent in the beta isn't just practice, it carries over.
