The digital edition of the acclaimed board game The Red Cathedral will be available to play for free on Steam for 12 days ahead of its full release this fall.
Publisher and developer Devir announced that the The Red Cathedral: Digital Edition free play period will run from August 25 through September 6, 2026. The promotion will give PC players an opportunity to try the digital adaptation before its full launch on Steam and mobile devices.
The game is based on the board game of the same name, which has sold more than 100,000 physical copies. The digital edition will support one to four players, with cross-play planned between PC and mobile versions.
The Red Cathedral Brings Resource Management to PC and Mobile
The Red Cathedral is a strategy board game centred on the construction of a cathedral. Players compete to build different sections of the structure while managing resources and gaining prestige.
Players first claim sections of the cathedral before collecting the materials required to construct and decorate them. The game also requires players to account for the influence of the clergy and the city's various guilds while attempting to gain the favour of the Tsar.
Once construction is complete, the player with the most prestige wins.
The digital edition retains the core mechanics of the physical game while adapting them for PC and mobile platforms. Devir describes the game as easy to learn while offering considerable strategic depth and replayability.
The original board game has received several awards and nominations, including a nomination for the 2021 Tric Trac d'Or and a finalist position for Best Strategy Game at the 2021 Board Game Quest Awards. It has also maintained strong user ratings on board game platforms, with Devir highlighting its rondel-based resource management system.
Solo and Multiplayer Modes Included
The Red Cathedral: Digital Edition will support several ways to play. Players can compete against friends locally or online, challenge random opponents, or play alone against AI-controlled opponents.
The solo mode includes three AI difficulty levels, giving players different challenges depending on their experience with the game.
Cross-platform multiplayer will also allow players on supported platforms to compete with one another. The full release is planned for PC, Android, and iOS, with cross-play compatibility.
A step-by-step tutorial is also included to introduce new players to the game's mechanics.
