Sony Interactive Entertainment dropped a full hour of announcements on June 2, and the PlayStation State of Play for summer 2026 delivered far more than anyone expected. The headliner was always going to be Marvel's Wolverine, but the event kept stacking surprises right up to its final minutes.

God of War returns with a brand new lead
The single biggest reveal of the night came from Santa Monica Studio. God of War Laufey is real, it stars Deborah Ann Woll as Faye (also known as Laufey), and it's coming to PS5. The reveal trailer ran nearly 20 minutes, which tells you the game is well into development even without a confirmed release date attached.
Here's the thing: it's been almost four years since God of War: Ragnarok, and this new entry isn't just a sequel. It's a shift in perspective, centering a character who was central to the previous two games but never playable. That's a bold creative call from Santa Monica Studio, and the footage looked confident enough to back it up.
Wolverine finally shows its claws
Insomniac Games brought 10 minutes of raw gameplay footage for Marvel's Wolverine, and the team was clearly not holding back on the violence. The game launches exclusively on PS5 on September 15, and this was the most substantial look at the project since its original announcement.
The combat looks brutal in a way that fits the character. Wolverine's healing factor plays into the mechanics, and the visual detail on his arms alone generated a lot of conversation online immediately after the stream. September 15 is now a locked date on the calendar for PS5 owners.
Until Dawn 2, Silent Hill Townfall, and a horror-heavy fall
Firesprite is developing Until Dawn 2 for PS5, targeting a 2027 release. The setup follows a group of ghost hunter influencers trying to go viral, which is a very different premise from the original's cabin-in-the-woods slasher format. New cast, new setting, same promise of decisions that actually cost you characters.
Silent Hill Townfall also got a confirmed release date: September 24. That's the same day Control Resonant drops, which makes that particular Tuesday genuinely stressful to think about from a backlog perspective.
Tomb Raider gets a date, and it's 2027
Amazon Game Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog showed a new trailer for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original Tomb Raider built as a lead-in to the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst. The new release date is February 12, 2027, which is a slight push back from its earlier window.
The trailer covered a lot of ground, including the iconic dinosaur chase sequence. The delay is minor, but it confirms the game won't be competing in the already overcrowded fall window.
Dune: Awakening hits PS5 in September with a solo mode
Funcom confirmed Dune: Awakening launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X on September 22, arriving with a new single-player mode for players who want to experience Arrakis without the online survival loop. The console version includes every update the game has received since its PC launch in summer 2025, covering quality-of-life fixes, expanded storage, better vehicle recovery, and bug fixes that previously left players stranded after sandworm encounters.
What most players miss here is that this isn't just a port. The single-player mode is a genuine addition that makes the game accessible to a much wider audience than the survival MMO format originally targeted.
Onimusha, Marvel Tokon, Stuntman, and more
Capcom locked in a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword: September 25 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X. A playable demo went live the same day as the State of Play broadcast, so you can try it right now.
Arc System Works revealed three new fighters for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls: Magneto, Carnage, and Green Goblin, all joining Doctor Doom's Knights of Doom team. Magneto in particular looks built around ranged pressure using his telekinetic abilities, which should make him a familiar pick for anyone who spent time with Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
One of the more unexpected reveals was Stuntman: Hollywood from Saber Interactive, a revival of the PS2-era stunt driving series. This version brings in licensed properties including Knight Rider, Miami Vice, and Mad Max, leaning into vehicle-based stunt sequences across fictional movie sets.
September is now the most dangerous month in gaming
Zoom out and the picture becomes clear. Sony's State of Play effectively confirmed that September 2026 is where most of the year's biggest releases are landing, with almost nothing heading into November to challenge Grand Theft Auto 6. Between Marvel's Wolverine on September 15, Control Resonant and Silent Hill Townfall on September 24, and Onimusha on September 25, that's a three-week stretch that will test anyone's time and budget.
For players trying to plan ahead, checking out gaming guides for the titles you're most interested in will help you hit the ground running when those release dates arrive. Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase are still to come this week, so the full picture of fall 2026 isn't complete yet.
