Resident Evil Requiem DLC Shadow Dropped

Capcom had been teasing something was coming before Golden Week ended. Director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa told fans to make sure they had finished the campaign. Now the reason is clear.

Resident Evil Requiem has just received a surprise free mini-game mode called Leon Must Die Forever, and it is available right now for anyone who has already rolled credits on the main story.

What the mode actually is

The official trailer description from Capcom spells it out directly: "Unlocked by completing the story, this additional mini-game mode challenges you to clear numerous stages as Leon while unlocking exclusive enhancer abilities. The fast-paced action is distinct from the main story mode, and is packed with replay value. Can you make it to the end alive and defeat the boss within the time limit?"

Here's the lowdown on the structure. Players work through 20 stages before reaching a final boss battle against Victor. The mode plays almost like a roguelike, with permanent death and fully randomized weapons and abilities each run. Difficulty scales the further you progress, and multiple difficulty tiers are available, including an extreme high-difficulty option that Capcom warns is for only the most confident players.

The key here is the randomization. You are never going to get the same run twice, which gives the mode a replayability ceiling that the main campaign simply cannot match.

A tradition Capcom keeps coming back to

This is not the first time Capcom has leaned into the "Must Die" label for post-launch content. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard shipped with Ethan Must Die, a brutally punishing mode where players navigated the Baker house with randomized weapon drops, limited inventory, and traps everywhere before a final fight against Marguerite. Village of Shadows in Resident Evil Village served a similar purpose, cranking enemy aggression and damage to near-unfair levels.

What most players miss is that these modes have historically become some of the most talked-about post-launch content in the series, precisely because they strip away the safety nets of the main game and force a completely different style of play.

Leon Must Die Forever fits squarely into that tradition, though the roguelike structure with 20 discrete stages feels like a more involved design than what either RE7 or Village offered.

Free content now, paid DLC still ahead

Capcom confirmed that Leon Must Die Forever is entirely free, requiring only that players own the base game and have completed the story. No additional purchase is needed.

That said, this is not the only post-launch content Requiem has planned. Capcom has indicated that actual paid DLC is still in the pipeline, meaning this shadowdrop functions more as a bridge, something to keep the community engaged while the larger content updates take shape.

For players still working through the base game, it is worth knowing the full picture of what awaits on the other side of the credits. Our game guides cover everything that opens up after you finish, including how Leon Must Die Forever fits into the broader post-game content structure.
