Rockstar Games is dropping the cost of upgrading Grand Theft Auto V to zero. Players who own GTA 5 on PS4 or Xbox One can now move to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version completely free, and PC players on the Legacy version can upgrade to the Enhanced edition at no charge too.
That's a meaningful shift. Before this announcement, getting the current-gen version meant spending $40 on a new copy. When the upgraded versions launched back in 2022, Rockstar briefly offered a $10 upgrade path before pulling it. Since then, the only option was full price.
What the upgrade actually gets you
The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA 5 aren't just ports. The current-gen release brought a fidelity mode running at up to 4K resolution, 60 FPS support, faster load times from the consoles' SSD storage, 3D audio, and DualSense haptic feedback on PS4. That's a noticeable step up from the last-gen experience, especially on loading screens that used to drag on for a full minute or more.
Here's the thing about the upgrade path: your progress carries over. Story mode saves and GTA Online progress can all be migrated from PS4 and Xbox One to their current-gen counterparts. It's a one-time process, and you won't lose years of in-game earnings or character progression.
The Kortz Center Heist is coming in July
The upgrade offer lands alongside early details on the next major GTA Online update, set to arrive in July. The Kortz Center Heist puts players inside an art gallery to steal its most prized pieces. Rockstar has been teasing the update through its Newswire, and the heist will be available to last-gen players as well, so the free upgrade isn't a requirement to access new content.
That said, with a big content drop incoming and GTA 6 on the horizon exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the timing of this free upgrade offer isn't subtle. Rockstar is clearly nudging its remaining last-gen player base toward current hardware before the next chapter launches.
The GTA 6 factor
GTA 6 will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One. That's already confirmed. So for anyone still playing GTA Online on last-gen hardware, this free upgrade is less of a bonus and more of a practical bridge, getting players onto the platforms where the franchise's future actually lives.
Rockstar has also recently revealed GTA 6 box art and opened pre-orders, so the release window is feeling increasingly real. Migrating to current-gen now means your GTA Online character, cash, and progress will already be waiting on the right platform when GTA 6 arrives.
