Blizzard Knows Sombra's Hack Removal Will Upset Players

Blizzard admits removing Sombra's Hack ability in Season 5: A Grim Doctrine will upset players, but hero designer Scott Kennedy insists the support rework is better for the game.

Sombra has been one of Overwatch's most divisive heroes since launch. Enemies hated being hacked. Allies hated watching her vanish for 20 seconds. And Blizzard has spent years trying to fix her. Now, with Season 5: A Grim Doctrine, the studio has made its biggest call yet: strip out the Hack ability entirely and move her to the support class. The devs know it is going to sting.

What Blizzard actually changed

The rework is more than a stat shuffle. Sombra is now a support hero, and her kit has been rebuilt around that role. Her damage-over-time Virus ability is gone, replaced by Cyberspace, a new projectile that simultaneously weakens enemies and heals teammates. The bigger loss, at least emotionally, is Hack itself, which has been swapped out for Hotfix, an ability that heals allies over time instead of shutting down opponents.

Here is the key here: Hotfix still lets her hack health packs and deployable objects like Torbjörn's turret and Ashe's B.O.B. That slice of her hacker identity survives. Human enemies can also be hacked through her ultimate, EMP, so the fantasy is not completely gone. But the moment-to-moment gameplay of popping out of stealth, silencing a target, and watching them panic? That is off the table.

Why the team pulled the trigger on this

Senior hero designer Leo Robles Gonzalez addressed the backlash directly in a recent dev livestream, admitting the team "tried a lot of different versions of Sombra where she still could hack enemies." Every time, the same problem resurfaced: even when her damage output was dialed down, the sensation of having your abilities yanked away by someone appearing out of nowhere felt oppressive. It was not a tuning issue. It was structural.

Hero designer Scott Kennedy was equally candid. "Obviously players are going to be upset that they lost this hacking enemies version," Kennedy acknowledged, before adding that the team believes "this overall is going to be better for the game and players will really learn to love and enjoy her."

That is a bold claim to make about a hero whose entire identity has been tied to information warfare and ability denial since the original Overwatch launched. Game director Aaron Keller had previously said the rework would not change "her identity," which now reads as a promise that was either walked back or interpreted very loosely.

The friction between identity and balance

What most players miss in debates like this is how hard it is to balance a hero whose core mechanic is removing other players' fun. Hack was never just a number. It was a feeling, and that feeling was almost universally negative for the person on the receiving end. Blizzard's data presumably backed that up every time they tried to tune her down, because the complaints never stopped regardless of how weak she was statistically.

The rework is a bet that Sombra players who stuck with her through multiple overhauls will adapt, and that a support version of the character opens her up to a broader audience. Given that Overwatch's support pool has expanded significantly with heroes like Mizuki (check out the Overwatch Mizuki guide covering her abilities and playstyle if you want to see what a fresh support kit looks like), the timing makes sense from a roster design perspective.

Veteran Sombra players have legitimate reasons to feel burned here. They invested time mastering a specific playstyle, and that playstyle no longer exists. The devs are not dismissing that frustration, but they are also not reversing course.
