Star Fox is back, and Japan noticed. The series' first new entry in years landed at the top of the Famitsu software charts for the week of June 22 through June 28, 2026, moving 41,680 physical copies on Nintendo Switch 2 in its opening week. That's a strong debut by any measure, and a clear signal that Nintendo's revival of the beloved space shooter has real commercial momentum behind it.

The chart that tells the story
The gap between first and second place this week is significant. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream held steady at number two with 28,543 copies sold, bringing its cumulative total to an eye-watering 1,410,570 units. That game has been a consistent chart fixture, and this week is no different. Powerful Pro Baseball 2026-2027 rounded out the top three at 16,950 copies, sitting at 146,335 lifetime sales.
Here's the thing: outside of Star Fox's debut, the top 30 is largely a story of Nintendo's back catalog doing what it always does in Japan. Mario Kart World sits at number six with 4,521 copies this week and a cumulative 2,979,306 units. Minecraft on Switch holds tenth place at 3,353 weekly copies with 4,229,124 lifetime units. Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues its seemingly endless run at number fifteen, adding 2,029 copies to a total of 8,449,970.
Switch 2 vs. Switch: the platform split
What's worth paying attention to this week is how the chart breaks down between Nintendo Switch 2 and original Switch software. NS2 titles occupy five of the top six spots, but the original Switch still accounts for the majority of the top 30 by sheer volume of titles. That split reflects where Japan's install base currently sits, with Switch 2 hardware still ramping up while the original platform's massive user base keeps older titles moving.
eFootball Kick-Off on Switch 2 landed at number four with 6,483 copies (41,508 cumulative), and Pokemon Pokopia held fifth with 5,870 copies and a cumulative 1,069,925 units. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Switch 2 appeared at number sixteen with 1,985 copies and 39,376 total, which is a modest but steady pace for a premium title.
The one non-Nintendo platform showing up
PS5 managed two entries this week. 007 First Light debuted at number eighteen with 1,779 copies (33,377 cumulative), and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales on PS5 appeared at number twenty-two with 1,397 copies and 16,240 total. The same Elliot title on Switch 2 sits at number nine with 4,077 copies and 27,751 cumulative, which puts the Switch 2 version well ahead of its PS5 counterpart in the Japanese market. That gap is a recurring pattern in Japan, where Nintendo hardware consistently outperforms PlayStation for multiplatform titles.
Cumulative milestones worth noting
A few lifetime totals from this week's chart stand out:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (NSW): 8,449,970 units
- Splatoon 3 (NSW): 4,550,462 units
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (NSW): 6,585,063 units
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NSW): 5,925,859 units
- Mario Kart World (NS2): 2,979,306 units
Mario Kart World's cumulative total is particularly striking given that Switch 2 is still a relatively young platform. Crossing 2.9 million units in Japan alone puts it among the fastest-selling Switch 2 titles to date.
