Over the Hill
Over the Hill is a relaxing off-road driving game centered around classic 4x4 vehicles, rugged trails, winches, and breathtaking scenery. The game immediately tells players that it's about the journey rather than the destination - a statement that initially raised concerns about whether there would be enough meaningful gameplay to support the beautiful landscapes.
Fortunately, the demo's active objectives make all the difference.
The standout moment came from rescuing another stranded 4x4 using the winch system. These rescue missions provide a sense of purpose beyond simply driving through picturesque environments. Trail runs add additional tension, creating challenges without resorting to traditional time-trial racing mechanics. One particular run ended in failure, and after restarting, worsening snow conditions made the second attempt even more demanding.
Players looking for a calm off-road experience with enough gameplay pressure to stay engaging should absolutely give Over the Hill a try. While the full game could benefit from additional objectives, the rescue missions and trail challenges already make this one of the more memorable Steam Next Fest demos.

Pigeon: A Love Story
Few games at Steam Next Fest 2026 are as strange - or as memorable - as Pigeon: A Love Story.
This unique demo casts players as a pigeon soaring across a full-scale recreation of London, searching for a soulmate among an astonishing population of birds. According to the demo, roughly 170,000 pigeons inhabit the city. Finding "the one" isn't easy either; one successful soulmate run took an incredible one hour, twenty-five minutes, and thirty-three seconds.
At first, the experience feels peaceful and meditative. Players collect breadcrumbs to increase their cooing range, follow clues scattered across the city, and gradually mark searched grid squares in red. Yet the immense scale of the task quickly becomes apparent. After struggling to locate a soulmate, even reaching out on Discord seemed necessary, only to learn that the average completion time is typically closer to fifteen to thirty minutes.
For players seeking a zen exploration game with an unusual twist, Pigeon: A Love Story delivers a fascinating experience. It's less of a quick-play demo and more of a mood-driven adventure wrapped around a massive search challenge. One piece of advice: leave the clues enabled unless you're looking for an extra level of punishment.

Choo Choo Defenders
Choo Choo Defenders takes tower defense in an unexpected direction by combining it with railway planning.
Before defending against enemy waves, players must first design their train's route. Once the track is laid, the train automatically loops through coins, cargo, passengers, enemies, and mission objectives, turning each stage into a strategic puzzle.
What makes the game so compelling is its satisfying plan-and-watch gameplay loop. Between waves, players select wagon cards and upgrades such as Flamey, M4A1, and Black Out before testing whether their carefully designed railway can survive the next assault. While it shares some upgrade randomness with titles like Endless Rails, Choo Choo Defenders feels more measured and strategic.
The demo proved surprisingly difficult to put down, leading to nearly three hours of gameplay before returning later to earn three-star completions on every available level.
If drawing efficient routes sounds just as enjoyable as defending them, Choo Choo Defenders is an easy recommendation. Success depends entirely on the quality of your track layout and wagon choices before the train ever leaves the station.

Jarred Defense
For players who miss the unforgiving challenge of classic tower defense games, Jarred Defense may be one of Steam Next Fest's biggest surprises.
This old-school maze-based tower defense title tasks players with protecting a cat trapped inside a jar from waves of hostile robots. There are no modern gimmicks here - no card modifiers, no FPS mechanics, and no shortcuts. The maze itself is your primary weapon, and a poorly designed maze can quickly become your downfall.
One of the demo's defining moments came when a single misplaced tower completely altered enemy pathing, redirecting robots past nearly every defensive structure on the map. The result was immediate disaster. Charger robots introduced another painful lesson: long straightaways increase their speed, while corners significantly slow them down. Understanding that mechanic required assistance from both the developer and a Discord community member.
Despite its brutal learning curve, Jarred Defense captures the spirit of Warcraft III custom maps and classic Flash-era tower defense games. The challenge is steep, but highly rewarding. After nearly three hours of experimentation and repeated failures, clearing Scratchpost Swamp and reaching wave thirty-five in Endless Mode felt genuinely earned.

Furyball: Rogue Revenge
Furyball: Rogue Revenge is a fast-paced action roguelite that flips expectations by making the ball - not the bat - the true source of damage.
The moment everything clicks is unforgettable. Herding enemies toward a shock beacon, launching a high-speed ball into the device, and instantly wiping out an entire group showcases the game's brilliant combat design.
During the opening half hour, gameplay largely revolves around recalling the ball and serving it again. However, once return hits become second nature, the experience opens dramatically. Arenas resemble squash courts more than traditional roguelite rooms, featuring pits, acceleration lanes, pinball-style flaps, and enemies capable of catching the ball and firing it back with even greater force.
What stands out most is the game's clarity amidst chaos. Even during intense battles filled with effects and projectiles, it's always possible to understand what caused damage, where the ball is heading, and why a particular strategy succeeded or failed. The boss encounter against Madball proved challenging even on Easy difficulty, yet immediately inspired another run.
Players searching for a roguelite that combines high-speed action with tactical positioning should put Furyball: Rogue Revenge near the top of their Steam Next Fest wishlist.
