Assassin's Creed Valhalla director returns to lead the entire AC brand

Eric Baptizat, who directed Assassin's Creed Valhalla and helped shape Black Flag, has rejoined Ubisoft as game director for the full Assassin's Creed brand.

Jean Guesdon, Assassin's Creed head of content, put it plainly on LinkedIn: "Eric needs no introduction in this universe. 16 years at Ubisoft, key contributions to Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla as Game Director, his passion for gameplay craft and his deep connection to this franchise speak for themselves."

That's the official word on Eric Baptizat's return to Ubisoft, where he's stepping in as game director for the entire Assassin's Creed brand. If you've spent time with Assassin's Creed Valhalla, you already know his fingerprints.

A career that speaks for itself

Baptizat's Ubisoft history runs deep. He came up as a designer on several smaller projects before landing as lead game designer on James Cameron's Avatar: The Game, which was not exactly a high point for anyone involved. What came after, though, was a different story entirely.

Black Flag. Then Unity. Then Origins. Then Valhalla as full game director.

That's four consecutive entries in one of gaming's biggest franchises, each one building on the last. Valhalla in particular became one of the series' most commercially successful entries, with Ubisoft reporting over 20 million players across its lifespan. Baptizat left the company in 2021, joined EA Motive, directed the Dead Space remake, and then moved into a game design director role on Battlefield 6.

tip
Baptizat's new title puts him over the Assassin's Creed brand as a whole, not a single game, meaning his influence will shape whatever Ubisoft ships next under the AC name.

Why this hire lands differently right now

Here's the thing: Ubisoft has been reshuffling its leadership across multiple franchises in a short window. The company recently brought in external talent to oversee its Tom Clancy games too. Baptizat's return isn't an isolated move, it's part of a broader effort to stabilize the creative top of the house.

The timing matters. Black Flag Resynced, the remake Baptizat had no hand in making, sold 2 million copies in a single day and hit the highest concurrent player count ever recorded for an Assassin's Creed title on Steam. The franchise has momentum right now. Putting someone with Baptizat's institutional knowledge in charge of where it goes next is a deliberate choice.

Guesdon's statement didn't hide the enthusiasm: “Seeing someone with his expertise, his rigor, and his collaborative spirit step into this role fills me with confidence and honestly, a lot of excitement, for what's ahead for the brand.”

What "game director for the brand" actually means

The key here is the scope of the role. Baptizat isn't directing one game, he's directing the brand. That's a creative oversight position that sits above individual project directors and shapes the franchise's direction across multiple titles and teams.

For a series that's been running since 2007 and currently has games in development at several studios simultaneously, that kind of centralized creative leadership matters. Without it, you get tonal inconsistency, mechanical drift, and entries that feel disconnected from each other.

Baptizat has shipped games at both ends of the AC spectrum: the swashbuckling freedom of Black Flag and the dense RPG systems of Valhalla. That range is exactly what you want in someone setting the creative compass for an entire franchise.

From EA Motive back to the hidden blade

His time away from Ubisoft wasn't wasted. The Dead Space remake was a well-received return to form for a classic survival horror series, and working on Battlefield 6 gave him experience at a different scale and genre entirely. Both projects demanded different things from a game director, and bringing that outside perspective back into the AC ecosystem could prove genuinely useful.

Pro tip: watch what happens to Assassin's Creed's combat and open-world design philosophy over the next few entries. Those are the areas where Baptizat has historically made his biggest mark, and they're also where the series has faced the most player criticism in recent years.

For fans who've been following the franchise through its highs and lows, and there have been plenty of both, this is one of the more encouraging personnel moves Ubisoft has made in a while. Whether you're still working through Valhalla's 100-plus hours or just getting started, the Assassin's Creed Valhalla guides collection has everything you need to make the most of Baptizat's last solo directorial effort.
