The island is not done with you yet
Something is very wrong on that island, and apparently audiences cannot get enough of it. Apple TV+ has renewed Widow's Bay for a second season, with Emmy Award-winning star and executive producer Matthew Rhys set to return. The renewal lands just days before the season one finale hits the platform on June 17.
Here's the thing: this renewal was not a surprise to anyone paying attention. Since its debut, Widow's Bay climbed to Certified Fresh status and picked up a string of critical praise, including labels like "the year's best new show" and "unlike anything on TV." That kind of momentum does not get cancelled.
What the show actually is
If you have not caught season one yet, the premise is genuinely hard to categorize. Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Rhys, is trying to drag a cursed, Wi-Fi-less island community into the modern era by turning it into a tourist destination. He succeeds. That is the problem. The locals always said the island was cursed, and it turns out they were right.
Blending horror with character-driven comedy, the cast includes Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, K Callan, and Emmy winner Jeff Hiller. Season one saw director Hiro Murai helm five episodes, with Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung handling the rest.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Katie Dippold is now locked into Apple TV+ with a new multiyear overall deal announced alongside the renewal. Her tease for season two is perfectly on-brand: "Season two is about how everything is great on the island and there's nothing to worry about."
Apple TV+ keeps building its library
Widow's Bay joining the renewed slate puts Apple TV+ in solid company with its own content. The platform has racked up 843 wins and 3,565 award nominations since launching in November 2019, with hits like Severance, Ted Lasso, and The Studio making up the backbone of that run. Widow's Bay looks like the next show in that tier.
For gamers who keep up with what is worth watching between sessions, this is one to add to the list. The horror-comedy mix hits a similar tone to games that blend dread with absurdity, and season one is short enough to binge before the finale drops on June 17.
Apple TV+ is available at $12.99 per month with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, and streams across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, PlayStation, Xbox, and most major smart TV platforms.
