Xbox executives plan to speed up ...

If you have been waiting for a new mainline Fallout or The Elder Scrolls game, you already know the pain. Fallout 4 shipped in 2015. Skyrim came out in 2011. The Elder Scrolls VI was announced at E3 in 2018 and is still, as of mid-2026, sitting in early-build territory. That is a long time to wait for franchises this beloved, and it sounds like the new person running Xbox agrees.

Asha Sharma, who took over as Xbox CEO, is reportedly pushing hard to speed up development timelines across Xbox's biggest franchises. Halo, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls are all in the mix, with Fallout and Elder Scrolls described as particular areas of focus for her leadership.

The plan behind the push

Sharma's acceleration strategy is not just wishful thinking. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood have both signed off on a plan to increase spending on top-tier games in the coming fiscal year, which kicks off in July. The budget is not finalized and could shift, but the direction is clear: more resources flowing toward Xbox's flagship titles.

Here's the thing, Bethesda has historically taken its time with major releases, and the results have generally justified that patience. But over a decade between mainline entries in both Fallout and Elder Scrolls is a stretch by any measure. If additional funding and executive pressure can shorten those gaps without gutting the quality, that is a meaningful shift for players who have been waiting years.

The budget increase for Xbox's flagship titles has been approved in principle but is not yet finalized, meaning the scope of investment could still change before the fiscal year begins.

What this means for Bethesda's biggest franchises

Bethesda confirmed two years ago that The Elder Scrolls VI exists as a playable early build, which is progress, but it is still a long way from a release date. A faster development push from above could mean more staff, more tools, or simply more urgency applied to a project that has been moving at its own pace.

For Fallout, the situation is slightly different. The franchise got a massive visibility boost from the Prime Video adaptation, and player interest in the series is genuinely high right now. Capitalizing on that momentum with a new mainline entry would make obvious business sense, and it sounds like Sharma sees it that way too.

Halo sits in a different spot. 343 Industries (now operating as Halo Studios) has been rebuilding its approach to the franchise after Halo Infinite's mixed reception post-launch. Faster movement there likely means getting the next major Halo project in front of players sooner rather than letting years pass between updates.

The restructuring question nobody wants to think about

The more complicated part of this story sits alongside the good news. Nadella and Hood have reportedly not ruled out restructuring Xbox's relationship with Microsoft at some point down the line. Options reportedly on the table include spinning Xbox out as a wholly-owned subsidiary, forming a joint venture, or separating the division more formally from Microsoft's core business.

None of that is confirmed, and it may never happen. But the fact that it is being discussed at leadership level signals that Xbox's place inside Microsoft is not as settled as it might appear from the outside. Any restructuring would theoretically make the division easier to sell or partner with external players, which is a very different conversation than "let's make better games faster."

For now, the games-focused side of Sharma's agenda is what matters most to players.

Sharma's broader reset at Xbox

This development push is part of a wider company reset Sharma has been vocal about since taking the role. Xbox has spent heavily on gaming acquisitions over recent years, and the pressure to show returns on that investment is real. Speeding up the release cadence on proven franchises is one of the more direct ways to demonstrate that the investment is paying off.

The key here is execution. Faster timelines only work if the studios have what they need to deliver. Throwing money at a problem does not automatically fix it, and Bethesda's development culture has always been one that values scope and detail. How Sharma balances urgency with quality will define whether this push actually lands.
