Microsoft has confirmed the next wave of Xbox Game Pass additions, and the headliner is one JRPG fans have been waiting for: Final Fantasy V arrives on May 5, available across Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The Final Fantasy series keeps filling in the gaps

This isn't a one-off addition. Game Pass has been steadily pulling in the classic Final Fantasy back catalog, and the pattern is hard to miss. Final Fantasy IV landed on the service on April 7, and now Final Fantasy V follows less than a month later. At this pace, the series is marching through its numbered entries in order, which means Final Fantasy VI subscribers can reasonably start paying attention.

Final Fantasy V is the one that introduced the Job System in its most flexible form, letting players mix and match abilities across a huge roster of classes. It's a game that rewards experimentation and has a devoted fanbase who argue it's more mechanically interesting than the more story-focused entries on either side of it. Getting it on Game Pass means a lot of players are about to discover that for the first time.

Everything else arriving before May

The full list of incoming titles spans a wide range, with several dropping this week and more rolling out through the end of April.

Available now (April 21):

  • Little Rocket Lab (Cloud, Console, PC) - Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass
  • Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato (Cloud, Console, Handheld, PC) - Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass
  • Vampire Crawlers (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, PC) - Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass

Later in April:

  • Kiln (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, PC) - April 23
  • Aphelion (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, PC) - April 28
  • Trepang2 (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, PC) - April 29
  • Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era (Game Preview, PC only) - April 30
  • Sledding Game (Game Preview, Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, PC) - April 30
  • TerraTech Legion (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, PC) - April 30

May:

  • Final Fantasy V (Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, PC) - May 5

The key here is that Trepang2 and Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era are arguably the most interesting additions outside of Final Fantasy V. Trepang2 is a brutally satisfying first-person shooter that flew under the radar at launch, and HoMM: Olden Era has been generating genuine buzz among strategy fans as a return to form for the series.

Nine games leaving on April 30

The additions come with a catch. Game Pass is dropping nine titles at the end of the month, and a few of them are worth playing before they go.

  • Citizen Sleeper
  • Creatures of Ava
  • Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
  • Endless Legend 2
  • Goat Simulator
  • Goat Simulator Remastered
  • Hunt: Showdown 1896
  • NHL 24 (EA Play)
  • Revenge of the Savage Planet

Citizen Sleeper in particular deserves a mention. It's one of the more thoughtful narrative RPGs to hit the service, and April 30 is your last chance to play it included. Revenge of the Savage Planet is also worth a session or two if you haven't touched it.

What this wave tells us about Game Pass right now

The service has been under scrutiny lately, with Xbox's new leadership acknowledging internally that pricing has become a friction point for subscribers. Dropping a consistent stream of recognizable titles, including a beloved JRPG series, is a direct response to that pressure.

For subscribers already on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, this is a solid month. Ten new games across a range of genres, a classic JRPG arriving in early May, and enough variety to keep most players occupied. You'll want to bookmark May 5 specifically if Final Fantasy V is on your list.
