Relationships in Paralives work very differently from what you might expect coming from other life sims. There is no queue of perfectly timed social interactions to micromanage. Instead, your Parafolk build bonds simply by spending time together in a group, whether they are chatting, doing activities, or just existing in the same space. The system is more hands-off than it first appears, and that is by design.
What are Together Cards and how do they work?
The Together Bar fills as your Parafolk spend time with another Para. Once it fills, you are presented with three Together Cards to choose from. These cards direct the flow of the conversation and are the main tool you have for shaping your Paralives relationships.
Each card color signals where the conversation is heading:

Together Cards color system
Babies and toddlers have their own unique blue cards that, when selected, level up their language skill rather than building a standard social bond.
The cards that appear are not random. They are shaped by each Para's personality, current needs, recent accomplishments or failures, and existing Relationship Labels. A Para with the Jester trait might want to crack a joke, while a Serious Para might offer a dry fact instead.
Levelling up a Relationship Label unlocks new Together Cards. When your Storyteller offers you the option to add a label or level up, take it. The new cards you unlock make future interactions easier to steer.
How do Relationship Labels get assigned?
Relationship Labels include options like Acquaintance, Friend, Romantic Interest, Lover, Fiancé, and more. They can be set manually in Paramaker when building your household (for labels like friend, love interest, or family), but outside of Paramaker they are controlled by the Storyteller.
Here is how it works in practice: if you keep selecting Together Cards from the same color category in a row, the Storyteller will appear and offer you the chance to either add a Relationship Label or level up the existing one. You cannot force this to happen by clicking a button. It triggers naturally through consistent interactions.
You can check the current state of any relationship at any time through the Relationships tab, which shows both labels and levels for every pair of Parafolk.
One thing worth knowing: Paralives allows conflicting labels to coexist. A Para can be both a Lover and an Enemy simultaneously, which opens up some genuinely interesting storytelling options.

How to build friendships
Friendship is the most forgiving relationship type to develop. As long as two Parafolk spend time together in a group, their bond grows passively. You do not need to do much beyond keeping the conversation positive.
Stick to white and green Together Cards, avoid red ones, and do not let either Para feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. Higher friendship levels unlock more dialogue options, including the ability to tell inside jokes, which is a nice touch that rewards players who invest in long-term bonds.
How does romance work in Paralives?
Romance takes more deliberate effort than friendship. Pink Together Cards are how you push interactions in a flirty direction, but success is never guaranteed. Several factors influence whether a flirtation lands or backfires.
Before you select a romantic interaction, hover over the target Para's portrait to see a breakdown of your current success chances. The base value starts at 0, and the following factors adjust it up or down:
- Para Vibe compatibility: A Jester paired with a Serious Para loses 20 points for conflicting Vibe types.
- Current emotions: If either Para is embarrassed (perhaps from a failed flirt attempt moments earlier), that applies a negative modifier.
- Relationship Labels already in place: Existing labels can positively or negatively affect flirtation success.
- Stats and personal attributes: Each Para's individual stats feed into the calculation.
A spinning wheel animation plays after you select the interaction to show whether it succeeded or failed. A failed flirt usually leaves your Para feeling embarrassed or sad, which then creates a negative modifier for your next attempt. Timing matters.
Personality perks that help with romance
In Paramaker, you can assign your Para the Good at Romantic Relationships perk. This raises their baseline success rates for flirty interactions and unlocks unique Together Cards that are not available to Paras without it. If you are building a Para specifically around romantic storylines, this perk is worth selecting early.
Proposals and marriage
Proposals have a dedicated animation that changes depending on the outcome. A successful proposal plays one sequence; a rejected proposal plays another, and your Para will be left feeling embarrassed afterward.
At the time the source material was written, planning a full wedding ceremony is not yet available in early access. The current method is to watch for a special yellow Together Card in your conversation options to elope. Selecting it triggers a quick wedding sequence. As noted by the Sims Community source, there is something charmingly old-school about proposing and immediately getting married in the kitchen.
Paralives is in early access and the relationship system will evolve. Some mechanics, including wedding planning features, are confirmed to be expanded as development continues. Check back for updates as new content rolls out.
How do you make enemies?
Negative relationships are just as easy to build as positive ones. Select red Together Cards consistently and your Parafolk will be on the path to becoming enemies before long.
The insult options can be personal. The game pulls from each Para's traits and personality, so options like "mock for being a clean freak" or "mock low charisma" appear based on who you built in Paramaker. Some negative interactions also have unique animations. The poke interaction, for example, shows your Para squaring up and poking the other Para's chest, only to get shoved backwards.
Once two Paras are enemies, the Together Cards that appear will lean heavily negative by default, making it harder to steer conversations toward positive territory.
Can enemies become friends again?
Yes, but it takes patience. After establishing an enemy relationship, the positive Together Cards that appear are limited and surface-level at first. Expect a lot of bland, neutral conversation (the source documented Parafolk chatting about pianos for roughly 4 in-game hours) before more meaningful positive options like jokes and compliments start appearing. Keep selecting the positive cards when they do appear, and eventually the Storyteller will offer you the option to transition to a friend label.
Tips for managing relationships efficiently
- Use Story Cards to boost social or romantic interactions if you are struggling to land flirty Together Cards successfully.
- Check the Relationships tab regularly to track label levels and spot any unintended negative shifts.
- Pay attention to your Para's current emotional state before attempting high-stakes interactions like proposals or first flirts.
- Conflicting Vibe types (such as Jester and Serious) create a -20 point penalty on romantic interactions, so factor this in when pairing Paras.
- Relationship Labels set in Paramaker carry over into the game, giving you a head start on certain bonds without needing to grind through early conversations.
