Paralives Tutorial And Game Settings ...

Starting a family in Paralives takes more groundwork than most life sims. You can't just click a bed and call it done. There's a full relationship pipeline to work through first, and the game's RNG-based conversation card system means things can stall if you don't know what you're doing. This guide covers every step from building romance to naming your newborn, plus the adoption route for players whose Parafolk aren't set up for a natural pregnancy.

Setting up your Parafolk correctly in the Paramaker

Before anything else, check your Parafolk's settings during creation. You can click the three dots next to the gender options in the Paramaker to open Advanced Personality options. From there, you control whether a Para can get pregnant or impregnate others. To have a baby naturally, you need one Para with each setting enabled.

This is the one thing you can't fix later. Once you're playing in a household, these options are locked. If you realize mid-playthrough that your Parafolk can't conceive naturally, adoption is your only path forward without starting over.

How do you build the relationship needed to try for a baby?

The relationship pipeline has several distinct stages, and skipping any of them means the option you need won't appear. Here's the full sequence:

  1. Become friends first. Start with friendly interactions before pushing toward romance.
  2. Switch to flirty conversation cards. The pink romantic cards raise the romance meter. Keep selecting them when they appear.
  3. Fill the conversation bar and unlock couple status. Once you've had enough successful romantic interactions, you'll get the option to enter an exclusive relationship. This involves an RNG roll, so it may take a few attempts.
  4. Keep building the relationship level. A very high relationship level is required before the next key card appears.
  5. Wait for the Discuss Relationship card stack. Inside this stack is the option to Ask if they want to have children together in the future. This card is random and won't appear until the relationship is deep enough.
  6. Succeed at the conversation roll. Destructoid recommends only selecting this option when the success chance is at least 70 percent. If it's lower, keep doing romantic interactions to push the odds up. A failed attempt means your partner says no and you have to wait and try again.

Once you succeed, the two Parafolk are flagged as ready to try for a baby and you can do so whenever you like going forward.

How to actually try for a baby in Paralives

This is the step most players miss. You can't just click the bed with one Para selected. Both Parafolk must be grouped together before the option appears.

Here's how to do it:

  • Click and drag to highlight both Parafolk with a blue selection box, or shift-click the second Para while controlling the first to group them.
  • With both selected, click on any bed.
  • The Try for a Baby option appears at the bottom of the action list.

After the interaction plays out, click on a toilet and select Take a pregnancy test. If the result is negative, you can try again immediately. A positive result triggers a notification.

What happens during pregnancy?

The pregnancy runs for three in-game days total, with each trimester lasting 24 hours by default. You can adjust the pregnancy duration in the Storyteller settings from the main menu if you want more or less time.

A visit to any Healthcare Center lets you find out whether you're expecting twins or triplets. The birth happens at home, so there's no need to travel to a hospital when the time comes. After labor, you'll be prompted to name the baby and choose which parent's surname they receive.

How to take care of your baby

Newborns in Paralives have five needs you'll be managing constantly.

To change a diaper, place the baby in the crib first. The diaper change option appears under Pick up from crib.

One thing worth doing early: talk to your baby regularly to build their Talking skill. This gives them a head start when they age up into a Toddler. It's a small investment that pays off later.

How to adopt a baby in Paralives

Adoption is available to any household regardless of Paramaker settings, which makes it the more flexible option. You can adopt by interacting with either the Hospital (opposite the Community Center) or the Pharmacy (opposite the pizza place) and selecting the Adopt Baby option.

The process takes a few in-game hours. When it's done, your Para returns home with the baby and you're prompted to choose a name. You won't get to pick the baby's gender.

Romance without the commitment

If you want your Paras to get closer physically without the risk of pregnancy, Destructoid notes there's a Get Intimate option on any bed that works with fewer prerequisites. You still need a strong romantic bond, but you don't need to go through the children discussion card first. It's a useful way to build the relationship level faster while keeping your options open.

For more on building your family and managing your household, the Paralives strategy guides cover everything from skill progression to Storyteller settings in detail. Paralives is one of the more thoughtfully designed entries in indie games right now, and the family system reflects that depth. The full range of content is still expanding since the game launched in Early Access on May 25, 2026, so some details may shift with future updates.
