What is the Music Knowledge Skill in Paralives?
Paralives has a two-layer skill system that sets it apart from other life sims. Every instrument skill (Guitar, Piano, and Triangle) sits underneath the Music Knowledge Skill, which acts as a multiplier for how quickly your Para learns each one. The higher your Music level, the faster XP flows into all three instrument skills simultaneously. Ignore Music Knowledge and you are leaving a significant speed advantage on the table.
There are 20 levels for both the Music Knowledge Skill and each individual instrument skill. As of the current Early Access build, no rewards are tied to hitting level 20 on any of them, though that may change in a future patch. The real payoff is the compounding speed bonus: a Para with high Music Knowledge levels their guitar noticeably faster than one who jumped straight into strumming from level 1.
How to level up the Music Knowledge Skill fast
Four methods raise Music Knowledge XP, and they are not equally efficient.
Playing any instrument is the fastest route. Your Para earns Music Knowledge XP passively while practicing guitar, piano, or triangle, on top of the instrument-specific XP they are already gaining. One session does double duty. The catch: your Para must be in a good mood with their Needs reasonably satisfied. A miserable Para practicing guitar earns instrument XP at a crawl and barely touches Music Knowledge at all.
Researching Music on a computer is the next best option. Click any PC or laptop, select "Learn about...", then pick "Music." Your Para spends time reading about music online, which directly increases Music Knowledge without requiring an instrument. This is the go-to method when your Para's mood is poor and playing feels wasteful.
Reading a Music book at a bookshelf works the same way. The Iconomi Alicias Romantasy Bookshelf costs 204 Paradimes and does the job fine. Click the bookshelf, choose "Read book...", and select the Music book option.
The daily newspaper occasionally offers a free skill level. On Spring 10 in Year 1, there is an offer titled "The Mystery of Perfect Pitch Explained to Beginner Musicians (Up to Level 7)." Clicking "Claim" bumps Music Knowledge by one level if your Para is at level 7 or below. Whether this appears on the same date for every player is unclear, but check the newspaper that day regardless.
How to level up the Guitar Skill
The Guitar Skill has 20 levels and two purchasable instruments in Build/Buy Mode:
- Muchi Guitar costs 225 Paradimes
- Muchi Golden Hour Guitar costs 630 Paradimes
Place either guitar in your Para's home, click it, and choose between "Practice guitar" (pure XP grinding) and "Play song..." (plays a specific track your Para has already unlocked). Both options raise the Guitar Skill, but practicing is more efficient when you are still in the lower levels.
Your Para can also discuss guitar with other Paras through social interactions, which provides a small additional source of Guitar Skill XP.
What songs does the guitar unlock?
Song unlocks are tied to Guitar Skill level, not Music Knowledge:

How to level up the Piano Skill
The Piano Skill also runs to 20 levels. Three pianos are available in Build/Buy Mode, ranging in price and style. If budget is a concern, there is a free option: a public piano sits near the library in a gazebo in town. Using it levels both Piano Skill and Music Knowledge, and your Para can play in front of neighbors, which adds a social element to practice sessions.
Piano song unlocks follow a different schedule than guitar:
- Below level 3: Für Elise, Gymnopédies, Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement
- Level 5: Rondo Alla Turca, Clair de Lune, Nocturne in E-flat Major
- Level 7: Flight of the Bumblebee
The Piano Skill levels faster the higher your Music Knowledge is, so the same advice applies: build Music Knowledge first, then commit to piano sessions.
What about the Triangle Skill?
The Triangle is available in Build/Buy Mode at a lower price than the guitar or piano, making it the most accessible starting instrument. The game technically supports triangle practice and the skill exists in the system, but as of the current Early Access build the play animation is not fully implemented. Your Para stops playing almost immediately. The Triangle Skill is listed in the game and will function properly once a future patch addresses the animation.
Music Knowledge Skill cheat codes
If you want to skip the grind entirely, the cheat console has you covered. Press Ctrl+F1 to open the Cheat Commands menu and enter one of the following:
- SETSKILLLEVEL KNOWLEDGEMUSIC X sets Music Knowledge to any level (replace X with your target, e.g., SETSKILLLEVEL KNOWLEDGEMUSIC 12)
- LEVELUPSKILL KNOWLEDGEMUSIC increases Music Knowledge by exactly one level
For the Guitar Skill specifically:
- SETSKILLLEVEL GUITAR X sets Guitar to any level
- LEVELUPSKILL GUITAR increases Guitar by one level
How does the Music Skill fit into the broader skill system?
Music is one of seven Knowledge Skills in Paralives, alongside Food, Fitness, Technology, Art, Repair, and Science. Each Knowledge Skill functions as a parent that accelerates the child skills beneath it. The pattern is consistent: raise the parent Knowledge Skill first, then the child skills level faster.
For players building a musically focused Para, the priority order is straightforward: push Music Knowledge to a comfortable level (aim for higher than your current instrument skill), then grind the instrument of your choice. Splitting attention evenly between Music Knowledge and an instrument skill from the start is slower than front-loading the knowledge layer.
If you are working on other areas of your Para's life at the same time, the guides for leveling the food skill fast and leveling the fitness skill fast follow the same parent-child logic and are worth reading alongside this one.
