What are Black Boxes in SAND: Raiders of Sophie?
SAND: Raiders of Sophie locks most of its progression behind the Tech Tree, and for a while that system feels generous enough. Then you hit certain nodes and the game asks for something you've never seen before: a Black Box. These aren't sitting in any town loot pile. You can't craft them at a workbench. The only way to get one is to go out and destroy another player's Trampler completely, which makes them one of the rarest and most contested resources in the game.

Black Box drop location
How do you get Black Boxes in SAND: Raiders of Sophie?
Black Boxes drop exclusively from fully destroyed enemy Tramplers in PvP. Winning a raid by capturing the captain's quarters console doesn't count. You need to push the fight all the way to the point where the opposing Trampler can no longer function.
Once a Trampler goes down, the Black Box spawns directly under the reactor. Walk over, pick it up, and get it onto your storage racks immediately. There's a known issue where placing a Black Box on the ground causes it to clip through the floor and disappear, so skipping the ground entirely is the safest move.
Each defeated Trampler yields exactly one Black Box, so building a meaningful stockpile means winning multiple PvP engagements. There's no passive farming route here.
How to destroy an enemy Trampler efficiently
Taking down another Trampler fast comes down to targeting. The reactor is the priority target: a clean hit on the reactor destroys the machine instantly. The challenge is that reactors are relatively small and the Trampler keeps moving, so landing a clean shot takes practice.
If you're struggling to hit the reactor consistently, switch your aim to the legs. Destroying the legs immobilizes the Trampler, turning a moving target into a stationary one. From there, finishing off the reactor becomes straightforward.

Target the reactor first
The solo queue advantage
Running your Trampler solo is the most reliable path to Black Box farming. Solo players only queue against other solo players, and solo ships tend to have significantly less armor and fewer defensive cannons protecting the Trampler compared to full crew setups. After testing this approach across multiple sessions, solo PvP consistently offers faster, cleaner kills than trying to fight coordinated crews.
Where do you use Black Boxes?
Black Boxes feed directly into the Tech Tree, where certain upgrade nodes require them as a cost alongside standard materials. These aren't early-game unlocks either. The Tech Tree nodes that demand Black Boxes tend to sit deeper in the tree, which is why you'll often accumulate a few before you actually need them.
For a full breakdown of every Tech Tree unlock and what each tier costs, check the Tech Tree upgrades guide.

Tech Tree Black Box requirement
Should you sell Black Boxes or save them?
Once you've unlocked every Tech Tree node that requires a Black Box, any surplus copies are worth 500 Crowns each at the shop. That's a strong payout for aggressive players who keep farming PvP after finishing the tree. The 500 Crown value also makes Black Boxes one of the better late-game income sources for players who enjoy combat-focused runs.
The key word is surplus. Spending a Black Box at the shop before you've finished the Tech Tree is a mistake you'll feel later when you're grinding another PvP kill to replace it.

Tips for consistent Black Box farming
- Queue solo. Solo matchmaking puts you against other solo players, who run lighter Tramplers with less protection.
- Prioritize the reactor. A reactor shot ends the fight instantly. Practice leading your shots against moving targets.
- Use leg shots as a fallback. Immobilizing the Trampler first makes the reactor far easier to hit.
- Store immediately. The moment you pick up a Black Box, move it to your racks. Don't drop it.
- Save before spending. Know your Tech Tree requirements before you sell anything. Check the buying and selling guide if you're unsure how the shop interface works.
