Slay the Spire 2 Boss Guide: How to Beat Fake Merchant

The Fake Merchant in Slay the Spire 2 is one of the most rewarding hidden encounters in the entire game, and most players walk right past it. Hidden behind a random question mark event node, this snake oil salesman looks almost identical to the regular shopkeeper at first glance. Once you know what to look for and how to trigger the secret fight, you can pocket 300 gold and a stack of free relics in a single encounter.

How Do You Spot the Fake Merchant?

The developers did not make this obvious, but there are four clear tells once you know what to check. First, the Fake Merchant's NPC sprite is noticeably larger than the real shopkeeper. Second, the candles scattered around his stall are oversized and look artificial compared to the natural, smaller candles in the real shop. Third, the classic "Sale" sign that hangs in the genuine merchant's shop is completely absent here. Fourth, and most telling, the background music is an off-key, unsettling version of the standard shop theme.

If all four of these details match what you are seeing, you have found the imposter. Take a breath before clicking anything, because your next decision matters.

What Does the Fake Merchant Sell?

The Fake Merchant does not carry standard cards or card removal services. His entire stock consists of knockoff relics, each priced at roughly a quarter of what the genuine versions cost in a real shop. The tradeoff is that their effects are noticeably weaker than their authentic counterparts.

That said, at such a steep discount, buying a few of these budget items can genuinely stabilize a struggling deck. The value math is real, especially if your gold is tight heading into Act 3.

He also offers a choice to add one of three upgraded cards to your deck. Depending on what he presents, this alone can be worth the stop.

How Do You Trigger the Secret Boss Fight?

Here is where the encounter gets genuinely exciting. If you carry a Foul Potion into the Fake Merchant's shop and throw it at him, he immediately drops the friendly act and attacks you.

Step 1: Get a Foul Potion from the Potion Courier

The Foul Potion is not something you can buy or find in standard loot. You need to land on a specific Unknown event called the Potion Courier, which gives you the choice between up to three Foul Potions or one Uncommon Potion. If you want to fight the secret boss, always take the Foul Potions. According to TheGamer's coverage of this encounter, finding the Potion Courier event signals that the Fake Merchant has a chance to appear later in Act 2 or Act 3.

You cannot acquire Foul Potions anywhere else in the game, so if you see the Potion Courier event, treat those potions as a long-term investment.

Step 2: Find the Fake Merchant on an Unknown Event Node

The Fake Merchant only appears on random question mark nodes, and he is not guaranteed to show up every run. He can appear during Act 2 or Act 3, so once you have your Foul Potions secured, keep checking every Unknown event node you can reach.

Step 3: Throw the Foul Potion at Him

Once you are inside the Fake Merchant's shop, select the Foul Potion from your potion belt and aim it at the merchant NPC. This triggers the combat encounter immediately, outside of a standard fight node. Make sure your health is in decent shape before you do this.

What Are the Fake Merchant Fight Rewards?

Defeating the Merchant pays out generously. You receive:

  • 300 gold dropped immediately after the fight
  • His entire bootleg relic inventory for free (typically 4 to 6 relics)
  • The Merchant's Rug (which does nothing, but you get it anyway)
  • A standard card reward screen with upgraded card choices

The relic haul alone is the real prize. Getting four to six relics at once, even discounted versions, represents a massive power spike at a point in the run when every advantage counts. Just read each relic description carefully before accepting, because some effects may conflict with your current strategy.

Is Fighting the Fake Merchant Worth It?

Absolutely, with one caveat: the setup requires patience and a bit of luck. You need to find the Potion Courier event, hold onto at least one Foul Potion through potentially multiple floors, and then roll the Fake Merchant on a random event node. None of those steps are guaranteed.

When everything lines up, though, the payoff is exceptional. The 300 gold covers most of a real shop visit, and the free relics push your deck into territory that would otherwise cost far more resources to reach. The relic stacking interaction with genuine counterparts, particularly Anchor and Orichalcum, can turn an already solid build into something much harder to kill.
