in Subnautica 2 ...

The Repair Tool is one of those items you'll eventually need in Subnautica 2 whether you want it or not. Broken-down equipment and malfunctioning devices litter the ocean floor, and this tool is what fixes them. Getting it takes a bit of legwork: three fragment scans spread across the map, plus one material that's locked behind a biome you can't safely enter without preparation.

What does the Repair Tool do in Subnautica 2?

The Repair Tool lets you fix damaged vehicles and broken devices scattered around the ocean. It draws power from a battery but doesn't consume much charge in the early game, so you won't be swapping batteries constantly. Think of it as a mid-game unlock that pays dividends once you start pushing into deeper, more dangerous areas.

Like every other tool in the game, it runs on a Basic Battery, which you can recharge or replace when it runs dry. For a full breakdown of how tools work and what else you can craft, check out our guide covering every tool in Subnautica 2 and how to craft them.

How to unlock the Repair Tool blueprint

The blueprint unlocks by scanning three broken Repair Tool instances found at separate locations around the ocean. You need the Scanner before any of this is possible. If you haven't built one yet, it requires 2x Titanium, 2x Quartz, and 1x Basic Battery at the Fabricator. Our Scanner crafting and blueprint guide covers the full process.

Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Unlock Repair Tool

All three locations are reachable from the default Lifepod starting position. Distances below are approximate:

Fragment location 1: Chap's base (south of Lifepod)

The first fragment comes up naturally during the main storyline. NOA will direct you toward Chap's signal, which sits roughly 217-220 meters south of the Lifepod.

  1. Dive underwater and head southeast from the Lifepod. Your compass heading should read between 150 and 165.
  2. Look for a tall, obelisk-like rock formation around 30 meters deep.
  3. Near the base of that formation, find the ring-shaped cave entrance marked by a small blue light.
  4. Enter the cave and look northwest to spot the hatch leading into Chap's base.
  5. Head inside. The Repair Tool sits on a desk near the entrance. Scan it.

This is the most straightforward of the three. The cave entrance is easy to miss from above, so approach from the side rather than diving straight down.

Fragment location 2: Cicada Wreck southeast (Lander Garage)

The second fragment is inside a large crashed structure southeast of the Lifepod, roughly 250-270 meters out.

  1. From the Lifepod, swim northeast with your compass between 30 and 60.
  2. The wreckage becomes visible around 30 meters deep.
  3. Approach from the left side and go underneath the structure.
  4. Find the opening and enter the ship interior.
  5. The Repair Tool is on the ground in the southeastern section of the room, near some benches.

Fragment location 3: Cicada Wreck northeast (Canteen)

The final fragment is the deepest and furthest out, sitting inside a second large wreck 347-350 meters northeast of the Lifepod.

  1. Swim south from the Lifepod with roughly 195 showing on your compass, then adjust northeast once the wreck comes into view.
  2. The structure sits over 50 meters deep.
  3. Swim around to the back side of the wreck and enter through the rear entrance.
  4. Turn left, then dive down into the next room.
  5. The Repair Tool is on a couch in the corner. Scan it to complete the blueprint.

How to craft the Repair Tool in Subnautica 2

With all three fragments scanned, head to a Fully Functional Fabricator to craft it. The recipe requires four materials:

The first three materials are manageable at mid-game. Sulfur is the bottleneck. It only spawns in the high-temperature volcanic zone east of the Lifepod, and you cannot survive that biome without the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. That adaptation comes from the Bloom-infested Angel Comb located west of the Lifepod. GameRant confirms you'll want to prioritize getting the Sonic Resonator before attempting the volcanic zone.

Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Unlock Repair Tool

What's the Repair Tool actually used for?

Beyond fixing vehicles, the Repair Tool works on broken devices and malfunctioning equipment found throughout the ocean. As you push deeper into the map, you'll encounter more of these. Having the tool ready means you can restore found equipment rather than crafting everything from scratch, which saves resources over time.

The battery drain is low enough in normal use that a single Basic Battery lasts through multiple repair jobs. Keep a spare in your inventory for longer expeditions.
