Who is Hugh Morris and why does everyone love him?
Hugh Morris is a purple-and-red jester Mii who appeared in the North American Nintendo Direct for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and became the game's unofficial mascot almost overnight. His name is a pun on "humorous," he lives on Yoomian Island (Nintendo's sample island for the game's American trailers), and he has a gift for making every Mii on the island fall in love with him. During the 22-minute Direct, Angie, Jess, and Dr. Winters all confessed their feelings for him at the Ferris Wheel. He chose Dr. Winters, they got married, and the internet promptly lost its mind. Hugh Morris does not come pre-loaded into the game, so if you want him on your island, you have to build him yourself.
Hugh Morris is exclusive to the North American version of the Living the Dream Direct. The European Direct featured a similar character named Bubbles, while the Japanese Direct used Carlo in a comparable role.

Step-by-step: how to make Hugh Morris
The creation process has two major phases: building the face in the Mii editor, then adding his signature under-eye makeup using the Face Paint tool. Work through each step in order before moving on to the next.
Head and hair
- Select the fourth head shape from the first row.
- Under Fringe, scroll to the hair part in the fourth column. Leave the back hair at its default style.
- Open the color palette and pick the fourth darkest shade of purple from the third-to-last column.
- Tick the sub color box for the fringe, then open the palette and select the fourth shade of pink from the last column.
Eyebrows and eyes
- Scroll to the bottom of the eyebrow options and pick the dotted eyebrows.
- Adjust size and position: click once, then four times, then twice.
- Color the eyebrows using the third darkest shade of purple from the third-to-last column.
- Select the semi-circle eyes without eyelashes. Adjust: click once, once, once, then twice.
- Switch to the pupils tab and choose the four-pointed star pupil style.
- Set the eye color to green from the left panel of the color palette.
Nose, mouth, and ears
- Pick the rounded nose from the first row, then nudge it down once.
- Select the second mouth from the third row, second column. Shrink it once and nudge it closer to the nose once.
- Choose the pointed ears at the end of the ear row.
Facial markings
- In the first facial markings tab, select the third option, which adds definition to the cheeks.
Before starting Face Paint, tap the smiling face icon below the Mii preview to check whether your paint layer sits below or on top of facial features. Getting this right makes the makeup look clean.
Face Paint: Hugh Morris's signature makeup
This is the most time-consuming part. The Face Paint tool is one of Living the Dream's new features, and Hugh Morris's under-eye design is the reason Nintendo leaned into it for his official tutorial.
- Draw white triangle bases below both eyes for the red makeup. Make two triangles first, then smaller triangles inside them. Use the duplicate tool to copy shapes quickly.
- Draw white triangle bases above the eyes for the purple makeup. These triangles are smaller than the red ones below.
- Draw white teardrop outlines touching the tips of the red makeup. Use a thick circular brush to dot white circles below the tips, then switch to a smaller brush to add gold dots inside the white ones.
- Clean up any jagged edges on the triangles before finishing.
Completing the look: the Jester costume
Once the face is done, head to the Where & Wear Clothing Shop and buy the Jester costume in red, yellow, and purple. This outfit is what ties the whole look together. The catch: the shop's stock is random and resets daily, so the Jester costume may not be available on your first visit. Check back each day until it appears.
Do not skip the daily shop reset check. The Jester costume is not guaranteed to be in stock, and there is no other way to obtain it directly. Plan ahead if you want to dress Hugh Morris immediately after creating him.

What personality should Hugh Morris have?
Nintendo's official tutorial skipped this detail entirely, but keen-eyed fans noticed that the wallpaper in Hugh Morris's house points to the Energetic Merrymaker personality. To replicate it, set all five traits in the personality chart to just a little right of center, into the slightly orange zone. For a full breakdown of how personality sliders work across all 16 archetypes, the complete personalities guide for Living the Dream has exact slider values for every type.

Birthday, age, and the "Don't Age" option
Hugh Morris has no canon birthday, so the community-accepted date is January 29, which marks his first appearance during the Nintendo Direct. His suggested age is 26, referencing the game's 2026 release year (making his birth year 2000). If you want to lock him at that age permanently, tick the "Don't Age" box in his settings. The aging guide for Living the Dream explains exactly how the Age-o-Matic and Kid-o-Matic items interact with this setting if you want more control over your island's residents over time.
Hugh Morris in the Living the Dream story
In the Direct, Hugh Morris was introduced by Angie to Dr. Winters with an awkward suggestion to talk about monster trucks. The two had a rough start but became close friends. Later, Angie fell for Hugh Morris after he comforted her through a rejection. When Angie tried to confess at the Ferris Wheel, both Jess and Dr. Winters showed up to confess as well. Hugh Morris chose Dr. Winters, and the Direct ended with their wedding. A follow-up trailer titled "Part-Time Jobs and Full-Time Friends" continued the drama, with Crystal helping Angie recover from the rejection while Hugh Morris discussed his love life on live TV.
For players who want to recreate this full storyline on their own island, the relationships guide for Living the Dream covers every stage from first meeting through marriage and kids.
Hugh Morris is not a premade Mii. The game has no built-in character presets, so every detail in this guide needs to be entered manually from scratch.

Sharing Hugh Morris with other players
One known limitation of Living the Dream is that Mii sharing requires both players to be on the same local connection with the game running simultaneously. This is a step back from the 3DS original, which had no such restrictions. If you want to share your Hugh Morris creation, you will need to coordinate with the other player in person. For everything else you can do once your island is up and running, the full Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream guide collection covers island setup, friendship mechanics, customization, and more.
