Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is one of the few entries in the series to give you genuine decisions during the campaign, and some of them carry real weight. Most choices are flavor, giving you different banter or minor character reactions with no lasting impact. A handful, though, will get someone killed, fail a mission outright, or lock you out of achievement progress. Knowing which is which before you pull the trigger (literally, in one case) saves a lot of frustration.
Below is every choice across all affected missions, what each option actually does, and which ones you need to pick for the best outcomes.
Mission 1: Mayhem choices
The opening mission keeps things light. Two separate choice prompts appear during a market sequence with Park and Dunn, and neither carries any real consequence regardless of what you pick.
What should you tell Dunn about the food?
Park can describe the food Dunn is eyeing in three ways:
- "Fish that smells like piss" — Park warns Dunn off the food, so he buys it for Pvt. Ju Kwon instead.
- "Yes, Sushi" — Park plays along and calls it sushi. Dunn believes it.
- No Response — Park stays quiet, Dunn buys the food for himself.
None of these options change anything meaningful. Pick whichever dialogue sounds most entertaining to you.
What does Dunn need to buy?
A second prompt asks Park to remind Dunn what he came to the market for:
- "Cream for your infection" — Dunn clarifies his infection cleared up; he needs stomach medicine.
- "Stomach Medicine" — Dunn compliments Park's memory.
- "Skin care" — Dunn jokes that his face soap has made him too beautiful.
Again, purely cosmetic. No achievement or story impact attached to any of these.
Mission 3: Following Orders choices
This is where the choices start mattering. Following Orders contains the most decision points in the campaign, and several of them are tied directly to achievement progress. Getting them wrong costs you the Silver rewards. For a full breakdown of every outcome in this mission, check the Following Orders choices and outcomes guide.

Following Orders interrogation scene
How do you interrogate the husband and wife correctly?
The first major choice involves confronting a couple in their home. The wife prompt breaks into a follow-up depending on your initial selection:
- "Comply, or I can hurt you" — Triggers a follow-up question.
- "Please join your husband" — Triggers a follow-up question.
- "Then why did you run?" — The wife joins her husband in the living room.
- "If you are loyal, you are safe" — Triggers a follow-up question.
- "I will not ask again" — Triggers a follow-up question.
- "Run while you can" — The wife flees to the garden and is shot dead. Wrong choice.
Avoid "Run while you can" entirely. It results in the wife's death and counts against you for achievement purposes.
The husband has three additional dialogue options that only unlock after you find specific items in the environment:
| Dialogue Option | Required Item | Location | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask about MP3 player | MP3 player | Bathroom cabinet | Husband explains it plays state-sanctioned music |
| Ask about novel | Western novel | Kitchen closet | Husband says it belonged to his son and will burn it |
| Ask about South Korean medicine | (Open the toolbox) | Toolbox in the room | Husband confesses heart condition, reveals defector location |
The South Korean medicine option is the correct path. It is only available after you open the toolbox, and it is the one that moves the mission forward properly.
What should you do with the woman in the cellar?
A hidden room in the bathroom contains a woman sheltering in a hatch. You have four options:
- "Please open the hatch" — She refuses. Wrong choice.
- "Open the hatch, or else" — She opens it and is brought outside. Correct choice.
- "Open up. You're trapped" — She opens the hatch. Correct choice.
- "No. We're going outside. The defector was found. It's safe to come out" — She leaves willingly. Correct choice.
- "Okay. Stay hidden" — She remains hidden but gets captured during the hanging, causing the North Korean soldier to be hanged alongside the defector. Wrong choice.
Any option that gets her out of the hatch voluntarily or by force (except "Stay hidden" and "Please open the hatch") counts as correct.
Should you execute the defector or refuse?
The mission's most morally uncomfortable moment: you are ordered to hang the defector.
- Refuse — Ri Ju-Young executes the North Korean soldier, then hangs the defector anyway. Wrong choice for achievement purposes.
- Execute — The North Korean soldier carries out the hanging. Correct choice.

Mission 4: Hired Gun — the fate of Phillip Graves
One of the most direct choices in the game, and the only one where a wrong answer ends the mission immediately.
- Shoot — John Price kills Phillip Graves. Correct choice. Mission continues.
- Don't shoot — Graves kills Price. Mission fails.
There is no nuance here. Shoot Graves.
Mission 10: Stranded — Ko speaks with Ri
Late in the campaign, Ko must give an account of himself to Ri. Two of the three options get him killed immediately.
- "You killed him, Supreme Leader" — Ko accuses Ri of killing the Supreme Leader. Ri has him executed. Wrong choice.
- "I didn't leave his side. He was shot before I could react" — Ko's false story doesn't hold up. Ri kills him anyway. Wrong choice.
- "I separated us. I never should have left him" — Ko admits fault. Ri tells him he failed her brother but gives him a chance to make it right. Correct choice.
The third option is the only one that keeps Ko alive and advances the story.
Do any choices change the campaign ending?
No. The choices in Modern Warfare 4 affect individual scenes, character fates within those scenes, and achievement eligibility, but they do not branch the overall story toward different endings. The campaign follows a fixed narrative arc regardless of what you choose. Getting the "correct" options matters primarily for players chasing full completion and Silver achievements.
