Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 spreads its camo grind across three separate modes for the first time, giving dedicated players 9 total Mastery Camos to chase. That is a bigger ask than any previous entry in the series. Three camos live in Multiplayer, three in Warzone, and three in DMZ, and none of them overlap. If you want the full collection, you are committing to all three playlists. Here is exactly what each camo requires and how to approach the grind without wasting time.

How does the MW4 camo system work?

Before you touch a Mastery Camo challenge, you have to climb through every tier below it. Each weapon has 8 Military Camos unlocked purely by leveling, followed by 3 Special Camos that each require reaching a specific weapon level and completing a challenge. After those come 4 Completionist Camos (Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, and Divergence), and only once Divergence is earned on every single weapon in the game do the Mastery Camo challenges open up in Multiplayer.

The structure in Warzone and DMZ follows the same logic: finish a weapon's base camo track, unlock a challenge, clear it, then repeat across weapon classes before the next tier unlocks.

Military Camo weapon level requirements

Military CamoWeapon Level Required
Military Camo 1Level 10
Military Camo 2Level 18
Military Camo 3Level 25
Military Camo 4Level 34
Military Camo 5Level 42
Military Camo 6Level 50
Military Camo 7Level 57
Military Camo 8Level 65

Max weapon level is 65 across all 33 weapons in the base game. That is the foundation every camo grinder has to build on before anything else matters.

How to unlock all Completionist Camos

Completionist Camos are the bridge between standard weapon progression and the true Mastery tier. There are 4 of them: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, and Divergence. The challenges differ by weapon class, but the unlock order is identical for every gun.

Gold unlocks the moment you finish all Military and Special Camos for a weapon. Platinum challenges open once you have Gold on every weapon in a class. Harmonic Break follows after Platinum is done across all weapons in the game. Divergence requires no individual challenge; it unlocks automatically once you earn Harmonic Break on a given weapon.

Here are the Completionist Camo challenges sorted by weapon class:

Assault Rifles

  • Gold: 15 Player Kills in a single match
  • Platinum: 50 Headshots against Players
  • Harmonic Break: 25 Double Kills against Players

All 3 Multiplayer Mastery Camos and their challenges

Once Divergence is on every weapon in the game, three named Mastery Camos unlock in sequence. The key difference from everything below them: Mastery Camo challenges are not tied to a specific weapon. You can use anything you want to make progress.

Mercurial Drift

  • Prerequisite: Harmonic Break and Divergence on all weapons
  • Challenge: Get 10 Kills in a match, 250 times (any weapon)

Polyatomic Reforged

  • Prerequisite: Mercurial Drift completed
  • Challenge: Get 3 Kills without Taking Damage, 300 times (any weapon)

Orion Reforged

  • Prerequisite: Polyatomic Reforged completed
  • Challenge: Get 5 Kills without dying, 500 times (any weapon)

All three unlock simultaneously across every weapon the moment you complete the challenge. There is no per-weapon grind at this stage; clear the challenge once and every gun in your arsenal gets the camo.

For a full breakdown of every weapon available to grind, the complete MW4 weapons and unlock levels guide covers all 32 launch guns with their exact unlock requirements.

All 3 Warzone Mastery Camos

Warzone runs a parallel camo track to Multiplayer. The three Warzone Mastery Camos are earned by finishing a weapon's base camo progression in Warzone, then completing class-wide and game-wide challenges in sequence.

  • Parallax: Unlocked after acquiring every base camo for a weapon in Warzone
  • Damascus Reforged: Unlocked after earning Parallax on every weapon in a single category
  • Empyros: Unlocked after earning Damascus Reforged on every weapon in Warzone

Damascus Reforged is a notable callback, being an animated version of a camo that originally appeared in Modern Warfare 2019. Empyros is the top-tier prize for Warzone grinders and functions as a mode completion reward.

All 3 DMZ Mastery Camos

DMZ's extraction-based format has its own three-camo ladder, separate from both Multiplayer and Warzone progression.

  • Chiral: Earned by completing the challenge that unlocks after finishing a weapon's base camo progression in DMZ
  • Ripple Tide: Unlocked after earning Chiral on every weapon in a single class in DMZ
  • Helio: Unlocked after earning Ripple Tide on every weapon in DMZ

Helio is the ultimate DMZ reward. Based on how the top-tier camos work in other modes, Helio should unlock automatically once the Ripple Tide weapon count threshold is met, with no additional challenge required.

What about Prestige Camos?

Separate from the 9 Mastery Camos, MW4 introduces a set of Prestige Camos tied to the classic prestige system (the one that resets your rank). There are 4 variants of the Pyroclast camo: Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter, and Pyroclast Cascade. These are earned by reaching higher prestige levels through classic prestige, not the standard prestige path that preserves your weapon unlocks.

What is the fastest way to grind Mastery Camos in MW4?

The most efficient approach is to combine weapon leveling and camo objectives in the same matches rather than treating them as separate tasks. Pick a weapon, identify its active challenge, then choose a playlist and playstyle that naturally generates those kills. Switching weapons constantly before finishing their challenges is the single biggest time sink in this grind.

For the Completionist tier, work through one weapon class at a time. Finishing all SMGs before touching Assault Rifles, for example, keeps the Platinum unlock chain moving faster than spreading effort thin across every class simultaneously. Save any Weapon XP boosts for dedicated grinding sessions rather than burning them in casual play.

The Orion Reforged challenge (5 kills without dying, 500 times) is the steepest ask in Multiplayer. Running your best loadout and playing objective modes that funnel enemies into predictable positions will get that counter moving faster than any other approach. Pair that grind with checking the MW4 maps guide to identify which of the 12 launch maps suit your playstyle for kill-streak runs.

The full MW4 camo collection is a serious long-term project. For everything else you need to get the most out of the game, the complete Modern Warfare 4 strategy guides collection covers weapons, maps, trophies, and more in one place.
