EA Sports FC 26: Free World Cup update ...

The biggest free update in EA FC 26 history just dropped

Patch 1.25, known as The World's Game Update, landed on May 28, 2026, and it is the most substantial content drop EA SPORTS FC 26 has seen since launch. A free 48-team standalone tournament mode, a Pelé ICON reward for logging in, sweeping Bruiser and Team Press gameplay changes, and a wave of Ultimate Team promos tied to international football: this is not a routine patch. If you have been on the fence about jumping back into the game, this is the moment.

What is The World's Game mode?

The headline addition is a standalone tournament that follows the full competitive structure, from the Group Stage through the Knockout Rounds to the final. The mode includes 53 fully licensed national teams, with 41 of those being qualified nations, covering sides like England, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada, Uruguay, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Portugal, and Spain. Newly confirmed licensing deals with Brazil, Turkey, Spain, and Portugal mean those squads come with official kits, crests, and accurate player likenesses.

For more casual play, Kick Off now lets you pick from 60 nations for one-off international matchups, so you can set up any fixture you want without committing to a full tournament run. The visual presentation has been upgraded too: licensed venues including Hard Rock Stadium and MetLife Stadium are in the game, alongside the official Adidas match ball and detailed face scans for many players.

One thing worth clarifying: without the FIFA license, EA cannot brand this as an official FIFA World Cup. The tournament structure, the group-stage format, and the real-world timing are all there, but the official tournament name and branding are not. For most players this will not matter much in practice.

What changed in patch 1.25 gameplay?

The patch notes for 1.25 are more substantive than a lot of people expected. Three areas got meaningful attention: the Bruiser PlayStyle, Intercept PlayStyle, and Team Press.

Bruiser PlayStyle changes

The shoulder challenge has been rebalanced significantly. The boost from Bruiser and Bruiser+ has been slightly reduced, while players with the Enforcer or Enforcer+ PlayStyle now receive a matching boost when receiving a shoulder challenge. Stumble direction and force now better reflect the actual Strength and PlayStyle gap between the two players involved, so a physically dominant dribbler is harder to barge off the ball than before, and a dominant defender still has the ability to push a weaker dribbler off possession. Detection of shoulder challenges from behind has also been improved, canceling attempts that would hit an opponent in the back.

Intercept PlayStyle expansion

Players without the Intercept PlayStyle can now access the same animations if their Interceptions attribute rating is 90 or higher. This is a quiet but meaningful change for anyone building squads around high-rated defensive midfielders who do not carry the explicit PlayStyle.

Team Press adjustments

This is the one that will affect the most matches. Pressure on the ball carrier in the defensive half has been reduced when Team Press is active. AI defenders will no longer double-team the ball carrier when your manually controlled defender is already marking them. When Team Press is active in the attacking half, aggressive double-teaming still applies contextually, so the tactic still has teeth going forward, just less suffocating pressure in your own half.

What FUT content comes with The World's Game Update?

The Ultimate Team additions split into two categories: immediate login rewards and ongoing event content.

Festival of Football Pelé ICON

Log in to Ultimate Team during the Festival of Football event and you receive a 93 OVR Festival of Football ICON Pelé for free, along with three 'Choose Your Journey' Evolutions celebrating his achievements at the 1970 tournament. This is the most straightforward free card EA has handed out in the FC 26 cycle, and the 93 OVR rating puts it in genuinely usable territory for competitive play.

Journey of Nations event hub

The ongoing FUT content runs through a new Journey of Nations Event Hub for the Festival of Football Season. The structure travels across five continents, with new campaigns releasing each week. Rewards are themed around iconic players, historic nations, and emerging international stars. Completing challenges earns you new Tokens that can be redeemed in a dedicated store for themed rewards.

Other FUT additions arriving via server-side release include:

  • The ability to remove Evolution Player Item upgrade progress
  • A new Repeatable Evolutions consumable
  • FUT Champions Tokens redeemable in the FUT Champions Store
  • A Festival of Football PlayStyles Lab

What are the best formations for the current FUT meta?

Formation choice matters more in FC 26 than in previous entries because player roles are tied directly to the shape you deploy. An incorrectly placed player loses role bonuses regardless of their overall rating, which means a well-structured 87-rated squad can beat a poorly organized 92-rated one.

After testing formations across the post-patch meta, three setups stand out:

Loading table...

The 4-4-1-1 has been one of the most reliable options since the patch. The CAM role in this shape connects midfield to attack naturally, the wide midfielders maintain defensive width, and the flat midfield line closes down the central passing lanes that opponents tend to exploit. It rewards players who want structure without sacrificing attacking output.

The 4-2-1-3 suits players who want to press high and transition quickly. Two CDMs absorb pressure during transitions while the front three are positioned to spring immediately on turnovers. The shape is less forgiving defensively if your CDMs are not rated appropriately for their roles.

For a more controlled approach, the 4-2-3-1 wide gives you a double CDM base for defensive security, with the CAM and wide attackers providing enough creativity to break down deep defensive lines. This is the formation to reach for when you need to manage a lead or grind out a result.

How to build a squad for the World Cup promo period

The meta during World Cup promo windows moves faster than at any other point in the year. Card prices shift overnight, new special cards shake up competitive play, and formations that worked last week may need adjusting by the weekend.

Focus on player roles over ratings first. An 87-rated player in the correct role will consistently outperform a 92-rated card sitting in the wrong position. Spend time checking role compatibility before you invest.

Manage your economy around the promo calendar. The Prime Heroes promo kicked off the World Cup content wave, with more themed promotions following. Players who enter each promo window with coins and tradable fodder ready have far more flexibility than those who panic-buy after prices spike.

Career Mode and Clubs updates

The World's Game Update is not only a FUT event. Career Mode gets the International Men's Tournament added to Manager Career, following the same group-stage-to-final structure as the standalone tournament mode. New End of Season Live Start Points let you jump into a save just before the international tournament begins, and Festival of Football-themed ICONs and Heroes are available in both Manager and Player Career.

Player Career also receives new Manager Live Challenges and Season Objectives tied to national teams. If you want to understand how all the new Career Mode systems fit together, the EA FC 26 Career Mode guide breaks down Manager Live challenges and the broader feature set in detail.

For Clubs players, the update raises the Archetypes level cap from 90 to 95, increases PlayStyle slots from 8 to 9 (unlocked at level 95), adds a fourth Signature PlayStyle slot, and expands the maximum range of various Archetype-specific attributes. These are significant quality-of-life improvements for anyone who has been playing Clubs seriously.

Is The World's Game Update worth your time?

The free 93 OVR Pelé ICON alone makes logging in a no-brainer. The 48-team tournament mode fills a genuine gap in the game's international football coverage, and the Bruiser and Team Press changes address two of the most complained-about gameplay issues from recent months. The FUT event calendar running through the Journey of Nations hub gives you weeks of structured content to work through.
