Mining is a fine way into EVE Online, but don't start with it. Do every starter job first , even the ones that have nothing to do with mining , because of the ships, skills, and experience you get from them. That was my plan when I made a fresh pilot this year, and it's what I'd tell anyone starting out.
I first played EVE back in 2004, and I wrote about why I came back in Is EVE Online worth playing in 2026? This piece is just the mining side: where a new pilot starts, what you mine with, roughly what it pays, and what can kill you while you do it.
Where Do New EVE Online Players Start in 2026?
New characters start in Exordium, a 53-system starter region introduced with the Cradle of War expansion on 9 June 2026, per CCP's Cradle of War expansion notes. PvP is switched off there completely: no war declarations, no duels, and criminals can't get in.
The trade-off is lower pay. Mission rewards, loyalty points, and bounties are 20% lower inside Exordium, and its ores are a "Grade 0" type with lower mineral yield than the normal versions, per the EVE University wiki. You leave through a stargate or a one-way "shipcaster" into normal high-security space when you're ready.
My new pilot's game logs start on 10 June 2026, the day after Cradle of War went live. The first thing the game did was drop me into a tutorial fight against a hostile battleship.
What Are EVE Online's Starter Jobs?
The starter jobs are the AIR Career Program, run by career agents. There are five mission paths: Explorer, Enforcer, Soldier of Fortune, and two Industrialist paths , one for business and one for production , per the EVE University wiki's career agents page. Most paths are ten missions long; Explorer is five.
The rewards are the reason to do all of them. Together they pay out roughly 5 to 6 million ISK, plus frigates, a destroyer, modules, and blueprints. The business Industrialist path hands you a Venture , the starter mining ship , in its second mission. The wider program also awards 750,000 skill points for hitting career goals, and since May 2025 Omega pilots receive double that: 1.5 million, per the AIR Career Program page.
It isn't a big time sink either. EVE University's guide to the career program puts the career agents at about three hours in total. Even if you only want to mine, playing every path once is the best way to start.
What Ship Do You Mine With as a New Player?
You start with a Civilian Miner fitted to your rookie ship. My log shows it pulling 7 units of Nephrite every 10 seconds, with each rock running dry after about a minute. I also tried to fit a Civilian Mining Laser Upgrade and couldn't , it requires the Mining Upgrades skill at level 1.
The real starter mining ship is the Venture. Its key advantages, per its EVE University page:
- 5,000 m3 ore hold
- Doubles mining yield as a role bonus
- +2 warp core strength, making it harder for anything to stop you warping away
- Flyable with your starting skills
An average-skilled Venture mines about 250 m3 a minute, filling its hold in roughly 20 minutes. That's the jump I hadn't made yet , I was still mining with only the starter equipment, so I wasn't doing very well.
How Much ISK Does Mining Make in EVE Online?
Not much at the start. EVE University's careers page puts a solo Alpha pilot in a Venture mining Veldspar at about 2 million ISK an hour. Its mining guide notes it's hard to make much more than 10 million ISK an hour mining solo in high-security space, even in better ships.
With only the starter miners, my own earnings were well below those figures , and Exordium's Grade 0 ore pays less than the numbers above anyway.
Mining also changed in November 2025. The Catalyst expansion made mining lasers cycle four times faster without changing total yield, and added critical successes: a 1% base chance for a cycle to pull +200% extra ore without depleting the rock, per EVE University's Catalyst patch notes.
| Pilot Type | Ship | Approx. ISK/Hour |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha (free) | Venture, Veldspar | ~2 million ISK |
| Any | Solo, high-sec, better ships | Up to ~10 million ISK |
| Any (Exordium) | Venture, Grade 0 ore | Less than above |
Can You Mine as a Free Alpha Pilot?
Yes, but with limits. Alpha clones can mine in a Venture or a Pioneer, but cannot fly mining barges like the Procurer or Retriever. Their mining skills are capped, with Mining Frigate at IV, per EVE University's Alpha clone page. Alphas also pay an extra 2% tax on industry jobs.
I paid for Omega on day one, and I covered why in my EVE Online piece. For mining specifically, Omega is what opens up the barges , and it doubles the skill points you earn from the starter program.
Will You Get Ganked Mining in EVE Online?
I don't think I ever was. I did get killed once, but I believe it was an NPC , and honestly I'm not sure how I would have checked.
Inside Exordium, players can't gank you at all because PvP is switched off. Outside it, high-security space runs from 0.9 to 0.5 security, and CONCORD destroys anyone who attacks you there , "but not necessarily before they've destroyed their target," per EVE University's mining guide. Gankers mostly hunt valuable barges, and the risk is higher in 0.5 and 0.6 systems where CONCORD arrives more slowly.
NPCs are the more likely problem for a new miner. Belts in high-security space can spawn one to three pirate frigates, per the belt rat page. A Venture can deal with them using two light drones, or simply warp off.
Is Mining Worth It for a New EVE Online Player?
Yes , as one of the things you try, not as the only thing. It's the same resource grind I enjoy in games like 7 Days to Die solo, and EVE lets you do it without ever fighting another player.
But do every starter job first. You get a free Venture out of the business path, millions of ISK and a stack of skill points from the rest, and you find out what else EVE has to offer before you settle on mining.
