Fortnite Guide: How to Unlock Survivors

Fortnite Save the World went free to play recently, and the flood of new players discovering its systems has been real. The Survivor Squad mechanic is one of the first things that will make you stop and scratch your head. It looks like a spreadsheet dressed up as a game, but once you understand what each piece does, it becomes one of the most satisfying progression systems in the mode. Here is everything you need to know to build a squad that actually works.

How do you unlock survivors in Fortnite Save the World?

Survivors come from three main sources. The most reliable method is simply playing the game: completing Quests and Missions rewards survivors passively as you progress. You can also open Llamas, which function as the mode's loot boxes and have a chance to contain survivors of various rarities. The third option is direct purchase using Gold at the Exchange Store under the Items tab, though this only becomes available after completing Storm Shield Defense 5.

Survivor rarity runs from Common up to Mythic, and rarity directly determines how strong a survivor's base stats are. One important detail: Mythic-rarity survivors are exclusively Lead Survivors, which matters a lot once you start building squads.

How do you level up survivors?

Leveling survivors uses a currency called People XP, which is earned passively from completing quests, finishing missions, and opening Llamas. The useful part is that People XP applies automatically across your Heroes, Survivors, and Defenders simultaneously, so you are always making progress on all three categories at once without having to manually allocate anything.

As People XP accumulates, survivors level up over time. There is no separate upgrade screen to manage per survivor; the system handles it in the background while you play.

How do Survivor Squads work?

Setting up your squads

Survivors are managed through the Squads section of the Survivors menu, which you access via the Command tab in the Homebase. Each squad has 1 Leader Slot and 7 additional Survivor Slots, giving you 8 total positions per squad. You start with limited squad access and unlock more slots and squad types as you progress.

The Leader Slot is the most restrictive: only Lead Survivors (identified by a Crown Icon) can fill it, and the Lead Survivor's profession must match the squad type. Here is the full list of squad types and their required leader professions, as documented by GameRant:

What are F.O.R.T. statistics?

Every squad you build contributes to your hero's F.O.R.T. statistics, which are the four core stat categories that affect your performance in missions. Each squad type feeds into specific F.O.R.T. stats, so building a balanced roster of squads is the path to a well-rounded hero. Here is the breakdown per GameRant's source data:

How do Set Bonuses work?

Beyond the base F.O.R.T. contributions, each survivor carries a Set Bonus tag. When you place multiple survivors sharing the same Set Bonus into the same squad, those bonuses activate. The thresholds and bonuses, per GameRant's data, are:

Trap Durability stands out here. Getting a +8% boost for only 2 matches makes it one of the more efficient Set Bonuses to target if you lean on trap builds.

How does the Personality Type bonus work?

This is where the system gets its extra layer. Every Lead Survivor has a Personality Type, visible when you inspect them. Fill the remaining 7 slots in that squad with survivors who share the same Personality Type as the Lead, and the squad earns up to a 25% Bonus Power Boost.

The catch is that chasing personality matches early on can backfire. Filling slots with low-rarity survivors just to hit the personality match will drag your F.O.R.T. stats down more than the bonus compensates for. The advice from GameRant's guide is practical: hold off on optimizing personality matches until you have a decent collection of higher-rarity survivors to choose from.

The Survivor Squad system rewards patience more than anything else. Your roster fills out naturally through regular play, and the optimization layers (Set Bonuses, personality matching) become genuinely satisfying to fine-tune once you have the survivors to work with.
