LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight does something genuinely impressive with its costume system. Rather than scattering dozens of reskinned generic characters across the roster, TT Games focused the entire wardrobe on 7 members of the Bat Family, each with a staggering number of outfits pulled from films, comics, animated series, and video game history. The total count sits at 126 suits across all characters, with more arriving through DLC packs. Batman alone accounts for 43 of them.
How many suits are there?
Based on data confirmed across IGN, GamesRadar, and Rock Paper Shotgun, here is the confirmed suit count per character:
The base game total sits at roughly 100 suits while Rock Paper Shotgun's full count including DLC reaches 126. The gap comes from packs like the Arkham Trilogy Pack, Batman Beyond Pack, and Party Music Pack, all bundled in the Legacy Collection edition. Pre-ordering the standard edition also nets you The Dark Knight Returns batsuit for Batman.
How do you unlock suits in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight?
There are four main routes to new outfits, and knowing which one covers what saves a lot of time.
Story missions
The bulk of your early wardrobe comes automatically. Finishing main story missions hands out new suits during the Mission Summary screen, and simply starting a new chapter often swaps characters into era-appropriate costumes. Batman's '89 suit unlocks at the start of Chapter 2, for example, while The Dark Knight suit arrives when Chapter 5 begins. You cannot miss these.
Bat-Mite's Shop
Once the Batcave comes fully online at the start of Chapter 2, a rotating shop run by Bat-Mite opens up. Suits here cost anywhere from 30,000 to 55,000 Studs each. According to IGN's wiki, buying every available outfit from the shop requires just over 1 million Studs total, so prioritise the ones you actually want rather than trying to clear the stock all at once. The stud farming guide covers the fastest ways to build that currency.
Side activities and collectibles
A large portion of the catalogue sits behind Gotham's open-world content. The activities that gate suits include:
- WayneTech Caches (unlocks scale from 10 to 180 collected)
- Lost Zoo Animals (Absolute Batman needs 9; Bronze Age Batgirl needs 15)
- Wanted Posters (Gordon's Batsuit requires 4)
- AR Trials (Knightfight needs 5; Robin's LEGO Batman Movie suit needs 15)
- Riddler and Cluemaster Puzzles (completing all Riddler puzzles gives the LEGO Batman: The Videogame suit; all Cluemaster puzzles give Batman Serial)
- Puzzle Rooms (The LEGO Batman Movie suit for Batman needs 3; Red Queen for Talia needs all of them)
- Falcone Missions (Catwoman's Animated Series suit needs 9)
- Ivy Plantlifes (Batgirl's LEGO Batman Movie suit needs 6)
- Waylon Jones Cases (Robin's World's Finest suit needs 2)
Talia's suit progression is almost entirely WayneTech Cache-gated. You need 140 caches for Ceremonial, 150 for Shadow War, 160 for her Animated Series look, and 180 for Bronze Age. Plan your collectible runs accordingly if you want her full wardrobe.
Account links and DLC
A handful of suits sit outside normal gameplay. Linking your WB Games account grants Batman's Golden Age suit. Connecting that same account to HBO Max unlocks both the Black Lantern and Dark Knights of Steel suits for Batman. Physical buyers of the Lego Batman Logo set (product number 76330) can scan an included QR code for the Golden Knight suit.
DLC packs add entire columns to the roster. The Arkham Trilogy Pack brings Arkham-era looks for Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Gordon, and Talia. The Batman Beyond Pack does the same for the futuristic animated series. Both are included in the Legacy Collection edition.
Batman's suits: what to prioritise
With 43 suits, Batman's wardrobe is its own project. Story progression handles a healthy chunk automatically, but some of the most interesting unlocks require deliberate effort.
Fastest free unlocks via story:
- The Batman (Chapter 1 start)
- Batman '89 (Chapter 2 start)
- Batman and Robin (Chapter 3 start)
- Batman: The Animated Series (Chapter 4 start)
- The Dark Knight (Chapter 5 start)
Best side-activity targets:
- Absolute Batman (9 Lost Zoo Animals) rewards the Scott Snyder-era design that Rock Paper Shotgun calls "probably the biggest superhero book out there right now."
- Zur-En-Arrh (Chapter 3 - Kite-Man) is a genuine deep cut from Grant Morrison's 2006 run.
- Mask of Tengu (55,000 Studs) references Batman issue 508 from the KnightsEnd storyline.
- LEGO Batman: The Videogame suit requires completing all Riddler Puzzles, making it a natural 100% completion reward.
Character-by-character unlock highlights
Robin (15 suits)
Robin starts with the Batman Forever suit by default. His most collectible-heavy unlock is the LEGO Batman Movie suit, which requires completing 15 AR Trials. World's Finest (2 Waylon Jones Cases) is an easy early win. Ice Armor locks behind 50 WayneTech Chests, making it a mid-to-late game pickup.
Nightwing (13 suits)
Nightwing's Silver Age suit (also called the Discowing) is the default, and the DC Rebirth suit arrives automatically at Chapter 5's start. The grind suits are Spyral Agent (90 WayneTech Crates), LEGO Batman: The Videogame (110 WayneTech Crates), and the story-complete reward New 52.
Batgirl (14 suits)
Batgirl starts with The New Batman Adventures look. Her most demanding unlocks are Costume Party (70 WayneTech Caches) and DC Bombshells (80 WayneTech Caches). Bronze Age requires 15 Lost Zoo Animals.
Catwoman (14 suits)
Catwoman defaults to her Batman Returns look. Batman: The Animated Series requires completing 9 Falcone Missions, making it one of the more mission-specific unlocks in the game. The Dark Knight Rises suit is a story completion reward.
Jim Gordon (14 suits)
Gordon's most unusual unlock is his Batsuit, which requires completing 4 Wanted Posters. It references Scott Snyder's "Superheavy" storyline where Gordon wore a mech Batsuit. His The Dark Knight SWAT look needs just 10 WayneTech Caches.
Talia al Ghul (13 suits)
Talia defaults to The Dark Knight Rises look. Her Red Queen suit (complete all Puzzle Rooms) is the standout challenge unlock. Everything else in her wardrobe past the story missions requires stacking WayneTech Caches into the hundreds.
Red Bricks add colour palette variations to every suit you unlock. Each suit potentially has up to 23 different colour variations via Red Powerbricks, so the total customisation ceiling is significantly higher than the base 126 suit count.
How do you change suits mid-game?
Open the pause menu and navigate to the Characters section. Select the character you want to redress and a list of every unlocked outfit appears below. You can swap freely at almost any point outside of cutscenes.
For players curious about how long it realistically takes to collect everything, the how long to beat guide breaks down the time investment for both the main campaign and full 100% completion.
If you are tackling suits alongside a co-op partner, the co-op and multiplayer guide explains how local split-screen works and whether both players share collectible progress.
