The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has released its annual Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry for 2024. This comprehensive study spans ages 5 to 90, marking the first inclusion of data from children aged 5-17, based on interviews conducted with parental permission.

The report shows that the average gamer is 36 years old and has been playing for 17 years, underscoring the longevity of gaming as a pastime. The gender distribution among gamers is nearly equal, with 53% identifying as male, 46% as female, and around 1% identifying as non-binary or preferring not to specify.
Ethnic diversity among gamers includes 75% identifying as White, 19% as Hispanic, 12% as Black, 4% as Asian/Pacific Islander, and 3% as Native American. The report also noted an increase in players identifying as LGBTQ+, now at 11%.

The ESA report highlights that video games are recognized for their mental and social benefits. A significant majority of adults (79%) agree that games bring joy, with 77% citing mental stimulation and 76% stress relief. Notably, 92% of Boomers and the Silent Generation acknowledge the mental stimulation benefits compared to 84% of Gen Z.
Pierre-Louis commented, "Above 75% of players say gaming brings joy or relaxation. The primary reasons for playing include relaxation (60%) and having fun (67%). This speaks to the emotional well-being games provide."

Generations Alpha and Z are emerging as enthusiastic gamers, with 79% of Gen Alpha (ages 5-10) playing weekly, compared to 56% of adults. Popular genres for Gen Alpha include arcade (64%), action (60%), and puzzle (56%). Both Gen Alpha and Gen Z prefer consoles (58%) and PCs (54%) for gaming.
