Drake Star Partners released its Q3 2024 global gaming industry report, showing mergers and acquisitions (M&A) growth for the fourth straight quarter. The quarter recorded $2.5 billion in disclosed deal value, plus $1.1 billion raised through private financings. Public market improvements and high-profile IPOs like Shift Up's contributed to this momentum. The industry still contends with widespread layoffs and tough funding conditions for growth-stage studios.

Steady M&A momentum and key deals

Q3 2024 saw 56 M&A deals announced, a 70% jump in volume compared to Q3 2023. Playtika's $700 million acquisition of SuperPlay (with potential earn-outs reaching $1.95 billion total) led the quarter. Tencent, Warner Bros. Discovery, Krafton, Capcom, Keywords, Nazara, and Infinite Reality also made strategic acquisitions to expand their portfolios.

Michael Metzger, partner at Drake Star Partners, pointed to recovering valuations among top gaming companies as a positive sign. Private equity (PE) firms drove several large deals, including Jagex/CVC and Keywords/EQT. This PE activity could sustain momentum in the months ahead as firms hunt for new opportunities.

"We are thrilled to announce that M&A activities have continued to gain momentum for the fourth consecutive quarter. It's also encouraging to see a rebound in the valuations of the top 30 listed gaming companies," Metzger said. "This ongoing recovery in valuations is likely to further stimulate M&A activity in the future."

Outlook and future prospects

Drake Star expects strong M&A activity through the rest of the year and into 2025. Falling interest rates and gradual public market recovery should support growth. Major players like Tencent, Take-Two, Savvy/Scopely, and Playtika are likely to pursue more acquisitions, including both transformative deals and mid-sized transactions. Private equity firms will keep consolidating, with more acquisitions and potential take-private deals expected. Large gaming divisions may divest, creating additional acquisition opportunities.

For private financing, key areas include artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain gaming, mixed reality, and platform tools. As public markets stabilize, IPO-ready gaming companies may consider public listings by 2025, signaling potential sector growth.
