Studio background and development team
CEO Åke André and creative director Daniil Sanders founded Cold River Games in 2021. The studio now employs 23 people, many of whom previously held senior roles at Grinding Gear Games, Paradox, and Fatshark. Team members have contributed to titles including Path of Exile, Stellaris, and Pillars of Eternity. Crystalfall draws on this experience to deliver a traditional isometric ARPG in the vein of games like Diablo and Torchlight, but wrapped in a steampunk aesthetic.
The game emphasizes item progression, character builds, and strategic theorycrafting. A new character class, the Technomancer, wields a magitech staff and represents the studio's approach to blending genre conventions with its industrial fantasy setting. Skills are tied to lootable items with procedurally generated talent trees, creating variability in how players develop their characters and approach combat encounters.

Blockchain integration focused on item economy
While gameplay remains the studio's primary concern, Cold River Games is investigating how blockchain technology might support secure item trading and progression tracking. André has stated that the team sees potential for web3 to improve aspects of the in-game economy, particularly around how players trade and assign value to items. He believes blockchain could suit ARPGs by enabling open economies and addressing persistent issues like item duplication and scams.
The goal is to implement this technology without disrupting the player experience. Blockchain would operate behind the scenes, securing item ownership and enabling traceability. This could allow items to carry a legacy as they move between players, creating a sense of provenance. André has emphasized that user experience will dictate implementation decisions, and any blockchain features will be designed to minimize friction in how players engage with the game.

Early community response and wishlist momentum
Cold River Games has built early momentum with its community outreach. The studio's Discord server has attracted more than 12,000 members, and around 100 ambassadors have been actively involved in providing feedback and supporting promotional efforts. On Steam, Crystalfall has gathered over 20,000 wishlists, signaling solid interest ahead of the game's full launch.
André acknowledged that securing funding has been challenging for many studios in the current economic climate, making this $2 million round particularly meaningful. He expressed gratitude for the backing from both Swedish and international investors, noting the value of local support in a competitive global funding landscape.
Carving out space in the ARPG market
Crystalfall differentiates itself through its steampunk setting, which the team believes is underutilized in the ARPG genre. The game's visual design and mechanical systems target players who enjoy item-driven progression and detailed build experimentation. With a defined development timeline, growing community engagement, and a measured approach to web3 integration, Cold River Games is positioning Crystalfall as a focused entry in the PC ARPG space. The studio intends to use the new funding to complete development and hit its 2025 release target.
