Turns out, Kliff has a harder time getting past a dress code than most dungeon bosses. In Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyssbuilt a surprisingly grounded obstacle into Chapter 1 , the guards at Hernand Castle won't let you through the front gates unless you're dressed for the occasion. No amount of combat skill gets you past this one.
This moment catches a lot of players off guard, especially during the "Mystical Key" quest in Chapter 1, "The First Encounter." You approach the castle gates, and the guards flatly turn you away. The fix isn't a puzzle or a boss fight , it's a wardrobe change.
The Outfit That Opens the Gates
There are three ways to get past the guards, but one stands out as the easiest by a significant margin. The Hernandian Attire is a free reward from a nearby side quest, and there's a solid chance you already have it sitting in your inventory without realizing it.
Before spending a single silver at the tailor, check your inventory. If you completed the "Actions Speak Louder than Words" quest earlier in Chapter 1, the attire should already be there. You can equip it right in front of the guard and walk straight in.

Open your inventory before approaching the castle gates. The Hernandian Attire can be equipped on the spot without any loading screen or menu navigation.
Where the Hernandian Attire Actually Comes From
The "Actions Speak Louder than Words" quest tasks Kliff with helping distressed villagers across the region. One of those objectives sends you to Murkroot Ranch, located just south of Hernand. There, a quarreling couple is dealing with a blocked chimney.
Speak to the woman, Lauren, and she'll explain the problem. Kliff offers to help. Climb the crates on the side of the house to reach the rooftop, stand on the chimney, and equip the broom Lauren gives you to clear it out. The couple rewards you with the Hernandian Attire as a thank-you. Simple as that.
It's a small, easy quest that many players skip past in a rush to follow the main story thread , which is exactly why so many end up confused at the castle gates later.

If You Already Sold It
Accidentally sold or lost the Hernandian Attire? It happens. The backup option is the Hernandian Banquet Cloak, sold by the tailor in Hernand's town center, right next to the blacksmith. It costs 7.86 silver, which sounds steep early on but becomes manageable once you've done a few faction quests or sold bandit loot.
Stealing a suitable outfit is technically a third option, but it requires a mask that most players won't have at this point in the story. The tailor is the cleaner path if you're in a pinch.
Once inside the castle, the "Abyss Without Balance" quest opens up, leading into Crimson Desert's first Abyss puzzle. That's where the real Chapter 1 content kicks off , the dress code moment is just the game's way of making sure you've been paying attention to the world around you.
