Crimson Desert review: 20 hours in ...

Crimson Desertis out, and Pearl Abyss didn't waste any time shipping a day one patch alongside it. Update 1.00.02 is live now on PC via Steam, and it's not a small one, boss balance changes, new skill follow-ups, a fresh tutorial quest, and a pile of fixes are all part of the package.

The developer put it plainly, urging players to grab the patch "for the best experience." That's the kind of language that usually means you'll notice the difference.

What's Different on PC Versus Console

Here's the thing: not every platform is getting the full update at the same time. PC players on Steam have the complete 1.00.02 patch right now. Xbox, Epic Games Store, and Mac App Store versions are confirmed to follow "at a later time," though no specific window was given.

PlayStation players land somewhere in the middle. Patch 1.00.01 is available for download now on PS5, with 1.00.02 arriving as a separate follow-up. Two of the more player-friendly fixes , faster cutscene fast-forwarding and the Chapter 4 Tenebrum boss checkpoint improvement , are specifically flagged as part of that second PlayStation patch.

PlayStation players will need both patches to get the full day one update. Patch 1.00.01 is live now; 1.00.02 follows separately.

Boss Fights Got Meaningful Attention

The global release of Crimson Desert brought a lot of eyes onto its boss encounters, and Pearl Abyss clearly had some tuning left to do. Reed Devil is among the bosses getting combat balance adjustments, and the bear enemy has had its instant-kill damage removed entirely with overall damage pulled back.

The Tenebrum fight in Chapter 4 also received a quality-of-life fix that's worth calling out: dying during the boss fight no longer forces you to replay the puzzle section that precedes it. Anyone who's hit that wall will know exactly why that change matters.

Bosses can no longer attack players who are in the middle of a revive animation, and general movement and fight progression bugs for several bosses have been addressed too.

New Skills and Combat Additions

Three characters picked up new moves in this patch:

  • Kliff gets a finishing blow added to his Flurry of Blows
  • Damiane has a new follow-up skill attached to her greatsword stab and uppercut
  • Oongka receives a follow-up attack on her dual-wield stab

The Skills menu has also been reorganized so that skill names and descriptions are separated by weapon type, making it easier to parse what you're working with. The "Watch and Learn" skill-learning feature got a usability pass as well.

Everything Else in the Patch

Beyond combat, the update touches a lot of ground:

  • A tutorial quest added at the start of Chapter 3 walks players through the Abyss Gear system
  • Housing mode usability has been improved
  • NPC dialogue, animations, lip-sync, and voice acting have been cleaned up across the board
  • QTE difficulty when captured by enemies now scales up gradually based on how many times you've been caught
  • Greymane comrade count display bug fixed
  • Localization errors addressed across all languages
  • Performance and stability optimizations on both PC and console

Pearl Abyss also published a list of known issues still being worked on, including an FSR4 bug that causes rain to disappear or the screen to blur in certain environments, a quest objective tracking issue, and a rare boss fight softlock involving Gregor, the Halberd of Carnage. The studio noted it's "committed to providing a more stable and enjoyable gameplay experience" and asked for patience while those are resolved.

More patches will follow as the team works through the remaining issues. For everything else you need to know heading into launch, browse the latest gaming news to stay up to date. Make sure to check out more:
