The biggest expansion Dave the Diver has ever seen dropped this week, and the first question players are asking isn't about the new fish or the jungle village. It's simpler than that: how do you actually start it?
Here's the thing: the answer changed between announcement and launch, and it's worth knowing exactly what the current requirements look like before you go hunting through old saves.
The prerequisite that no longer exists
Earlier Dave the Diver DLCs, including the Godzilla collaboration and Ichiban's Holiday, both required players to reach specific points in the base game's story before the new content would unlock. Into the Jungle was originally set up the same way, with a full base game completion gating access to the expansion.
That requirement has since been dropped. Mintrocket made the call to remove the base game save prerequisite entirely, largely in response to community feedback from players who had moved on from their original saves or were picking the game up fresh. The result is a much more accessible entry point for what is by far the largest story expansion the game has received.
Two ways to get into Utara
Once the DLC is purchased and installed, the title menu will display a prompt confirming it's ready to play. From there, you have two options.
The first is jumping in from an existing save file. If your base game progress reaches the main story's epilogue, Dr. Bacon will approach your boat while you're out with Cobra and kick off a quest called "Friends" that serves as the DLC's opening. If he doesn't appear immediately, try diving and returning to the boat to trigger the sequence.
The second option skips the base game entirely. Selecting the DLC from the title menu without a save file drops you directly onto the boat with Cobra. The Friends quest plays out the same way regardless of which path you take, so new players aren't missing any setup.
What you're actually getting into
The scope of Into the Jungle is worth flagging for anyone on the fence. The main storyline runs 7 to 8 hours on its own. Completing side quests, mini-games, and optional content pushes that total to somewhere between 18 and 20 hours. For context, the base game's main story takes roughly 25 to 30 hours, which means this expansion is running at about 70 percent of that length in optional content alone.
The new setting is Utara, a jungle environment built around Utara Lake and its surrounding village. There's a full cast of new villagers to interact with, new species to catch across different depth zones, and an expanded restaurant system with new dishes. If you want a head start on the culinary side, the complete new recipe list for Into the Jungle covers everything from default dishes to Artisan Flame unlocks and VIP specials.
The expansion is currently available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch (both generations), and iOS.
For players ready to get their bearings in Utara, the Dave the Diver Into the Jungle guide collection has everything from fish locations by depth zone to villager gift preferences to help you hit the ground running.
