Marvel Rivals Season 9.5: New Hero 'The Hood' Joins the Roster - Inven Global

Marvel Rivals is about to take up a lot less space on your drive. Season 9.5, arriving August 7, brings a full texture compression overhaul that cuts the PC install size by roughly 40GB and trims console versions on PS5 and Xbox by around 15GB.

To put those numbers in context: the PC version shrinks by over 57 percent, while console players get a reduction of approximately 20 percent off the current 73GB footprint. Creative director Guangyun Chen announced the changes in a Dev Vision video, stating the team has achieved this “without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity.”

What the texture compression overhaul actually means

Here's the thing: a 57 percent reduction on PC is not a minor housekeeping patch. NetEase has completely repackaged the game's texture assets, compressing them without downgrading resolution or detail. The result is a leaner install that should be noticeable for anyone who has been rationing SSD space to keep Marvel Rivals around.

The trade-off is a larger-than-usual initial download when Season 9.5 goes live. Because the entire asset package is being restructured from the ground up, players will need to re-download the full game rather than receiving a standard incremental patch. Chen acknowledged this directly: "The initial Season 9.5 update will be larger than usual, but the final install size will be much lighter."

That one-time cost is worth absorbing. Once the download completes, PC players will be sitting on a noticeably lighter install, and console players will recover meaningful space on systems where storage management is a constant headache.

The timing makes sense given where the game stands

Marvels Rivals has remained one of the most-played games on both Xbox and PlayStation since its late 2024 launch, and NetEase has kept a steady content pipeline running. The Season 9.5 timing for this kind of infrastructure work is deliberate. The game is deep enough into its live service cycle that a major technical overhaul can be absorbed without disrupting a major content drop.

Season 9.5 launches August 7. The initial re-download will be larger than a standard update, but the final installed size will be significantly smaller across all platforms.

The compression work also arrives while the team is managing some player friction. Season 9's UI changes drew criticism from a vocal portion of the player base, pulling the game's Steam user review score into mixed territory. NetEase has a track record of responding to feedback, and this kind of technical investment signals the studio is still treating the long-term health of the game seriously.

What changes alongside the compression

Season 9.5 is not purely a backend update. The Dev Vision video from Guangyun Chen frames the compression overhaul as one component of a broader seasonal update. For players tracking every balance shift and new addition, the full Marvel Rivals Season 8 patch notes cover the mechanical changes that have shaped the current meta heading into this update.

The key here is that storage optimization at this scale is relatively rare in live service games. Most studios accept file bloat as an unavoidable side effect of ongoing content releases. Actively reversing that trend, especially with a result this significant on PC, is a meaningful commitment to players who keep the game permanently installed.
