DC has officially announced DCKO, a free-to-play tag fighter for mobile devices developed by new studio Drop Fake. Set within DC's shared comic book universe, the game is targeting a 2027 launch and pre-registration is already open at playdcko.com. If you were hoping this was Dodo Duckie news, well, it is not that either, but DCKO is at least worth a closer look before writing it off entirely.

The roster goes deeper than the big three
Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are confirmed, which surprises nobody. What is actually interesting is that John Constantine is already on the roster at launch. The warlock himself was absent from both Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2, so seeing him included in a DC fighter at all is a small win for fans of DC's darker, street-level characters. For a tag fighter, the roster composition matters a lot, and Drop Fake seems to understand that pulling in more niche DC figures will help the game stand apart from a simple superhero brawler.
The tag-fighter format also opens up some real potential here. Pairing characters whose abilities complement each other is half the fun in this sub-genre, and with a universe as deep as DC's, there is no shortage of directions the roster could go post-launch.
Mobile is a tough sell for fighting game fans
Here's the thing: fighting games and touchscreens have always had a complicated relationship. Tapping and swiping is a fundamentally different experience from a controller or a fight stick, and the genre's most dedicated players have made their preferences clear for decades. The honest read on DCKO is that it is probably not targeting the FGC. This looks more like a DC-branded mobile experience aimed at casual players who want to punch Superman with Batman on their lunch break.
That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does set expectations. A free-to-play mobile fighter will live or die by its monetization model, and Drop Fake has not detailed that side of the game yet. That detail will matter more than the roster size when the game actually launches.
The Injustice 3 question nobody can ignore
It has been nearly a decade since Injustice 2 launched in 2017. NetherRealm Studios has shipped nothing but Mortal Kombat games in that window, and the DC fighting game space has sat completely empty. Rumors of a third Injustice entry have circulated for years without any official confirmation from NetherRealm or Warner Bros.
That context is why DCKO's announcement landed with a thud for a portion of the community. Fans who have been waiting for a proper console and PC DC fighter are watching a mobile free-to-play game fill that slot instead. The two things are not mutually exclusive, of course. DCKO existing does not prevent NetherRealm from eventually announcing Injustice 3. But the timing stings a little.
What Drop Fake needs to prove
Drop Fake is an unproven studio stepping into a genre with extremely vocal and knowledgeable fans. The studio has a 2027 window to build momentum, refine the combat system, and demonstrate that DCKO's monetization will not undermine the experience. Getting Constantine on the roster early is a good signal that the team knows the IP. Whether the actual fighting mechanics translate well to mobile is the question that only hands-on time will answer.
For players who want to track DCKO's development or explore other fighting and adventure games in the meantime, keeping an eye on how Drop Fake communicates updates over the next year will tell you a lot about the studio's ambitions for the game. Pre-registration is live now, and the gaming guides hub will have more coverage as the 2027 launch approaches.
