Discord doubles free upload limit to 20MB starting today

Setting Rich Presence - Documentation - Discord

Two years ago, Discord quietly cut its free upload limit down to 10MB, frustrating millions of users who relied on the platform to share clips, screenshots, and audio files without a Nitro subscription. Today, that decision gets walked back.

Starting August 14, 2026, the free upload cap doubles to 20MB. Discord confirmed the change directly on its official account, describing it as a straightforward increase for all free users. Nitro subscribers keep their existing higher limits, so this is purely a win for the unsubscribed majority.

What actually changed beyond the number

The headline figure is the 20MB cap, but there is a second change that deserves attention. On mobile, Discord previously measured file sizes after compression on iOS and Android. That meant a photo or video could compress down enough to slip under the old 10MB ceiling even if the original file was larger.

That behavior is gone now. Discord has aligned mobile file size checks with how desktop already worked, measuring the file before compression rather than after. The practical effect depends on your device. Desktop users will generally find the new 20MB limit easier to work with. Mobile users, particularly on iOS, may hit the cap more often than before because uncompressed files tend to run larger.

Here's the thing: this is not a pure upgrade for everyone. If you were previously sneaking larger files through on mobile because compression brought them under the limit, that workaround no longer applies.

The file types that benefit most

Discord supports a solid range of formats under this limit. The most relevant for gamers are MP4 video files (encoded with H.264, HEVC/H.265, or AV1), MP3 audio, MOV clips, JPEG images, and PDFs. Doubling the cap from 10MB to 20MB makes a real difference for short gameplay clips and highlight reels, which routinely exceed 10MB even at modest quality settings.

tip
MP4 files encoded with H.264 tend to compress more efficiently than HEVC or AV1 at equivalent quality, so if you are trying to keep clips under 20MB, H.264 is still the safer default for short recordings.

The 20MB ceiling still will not cover longer recordings or high-resolution screen captures, so Nitro remains the path for heavier sharing. But for quick clips, memes, and voice notes, the bump is meaningful.

Two years is a long time to wait for a reversal

The original cut to 10MB landed poorly. At the time, many users saw it as a push toward paid subscriptions rather than a technical necessity. The platform had been at 8MB for years before briefly raising limits, so the reduction felt like a step backward after players had already adjusted their habits around higher caps.

For gaming communities in particular, where sharing short clips and screenshots is part of daily server life, 10MB was a constant friction point. A 30-second 1080p clip at standard bitrate can easily hit 15 to 25MB, meaning most gameplay highlights required external hosting or a Nitro upgrade just to post in a server.

Whether this reversal came from sustained user pressure or a strategic recalculation is not clear, but the timing aligns with a broader pattern of platforms quietly restoring features that generated backlash when removed.

If you spend time in gaming communities on Discord, you will notice the difference immediately. And if you are looking for more ways to make the most of your time across gaming platforms, the gaming guides section has you covered, from Grow a Garden 2 Megaphone codes to deeper strategy breakdowns like the 77-Bit Bytes maximizing guide.
