Divinity World Premiere Trailer from The Game Awards 2025 : r/pcgaming

Seven months after Larian Studios dropped the Divinity cinematic trailer, a content creator has found something hiding in plain sight the entire time: a runic message engraved on a character's crown that may have just revealed the game's central villain.

The discovery comes from WolfheartFPS, who noticed that the spiky crown worn by the chained, lacerated old man at the start of the trailer is covered in symbols. Not decorative nonsense, but actual Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet on record, used during the Migration Period between 300 and 600 CE.

The runes that changed everything

The key detail here is how Wolfheart actually got a clear look at those symbols. A behind-the-scenes video from Unit Image, the 3D animation and visual effects studio that worked with Larian on the cinematic, was shared just days ago and shows the character model in much greater detail than the original trailer ever did. That level of detail made the runes legible in a way the compressed trailer footage simply did not allow.

Deciphering Elder Futhark is genuinely difficult work. The writing system is phonetic rather than alphabetic in the modern sense, which means the same rune can represent different sounds depending on context. Wolfheart worked through that complexity and landed on a reading of "chaos is coming," or more precisely in its phonetic breakdown: "kay oss iz kum ing."

That is not a vague thematic hint. That is a direct callout to one of the most significant figures in Divinity lore.

Who the Lord of Chaos actually is

For players who came to the series through Divinity: Original Sin 2 and may not be deep into the broader lore, here is the lowdown. The Lord of Chaos is the creator of demons in the Divinity universe, and as of existing canon, he is imprisoned in Tartarus, the game's equivalent of hell. He is not a minor figure. He is the kind of villain whose escape would reshape the entire world.

The trailer already had fans theorizing about a chaos-focused narrative. The hellstone artifact, which Larian teased via a mysterious desert statue before the full reveal at The Game Awards 2025, connects directly to chaos magic in the series. The trailer's tone, frantic and destructive, reinforced that reading. The runes now give that theory a concrete anchor.

important
Wolfheart's translation is fan-led analysis, not an official Larian confirmation. The phonetic nature of Elder Futhark means alternative readings are possible, but the thematic alignment with existing lore is hard to dismiss.

What this means for the new game's direction

Divinity is technically the seventh entry in the series, and Larian has been careful not to position it as a sequel or a soft reboot in any straightforward way. What most players miss when they look at the trailer is that Larian is threading a very specific needle: familiar enough for series veterans to feel the weight of the lore, fresh enough that newcomers are not lost.

If the Lord of Chaos is confirmed as the main antagonist, that resolves one of the biggest open questions about the game's scope. An imprisoned god of chaos breaking free is the kind of premise that justifies a full narrative reset while still rewarding players who know why Tartarus matters.

Larian has not announced a release date for Divinity. Given the studio's history with both Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, an early access period before full launch remains a realistic expectation. For now, the community has more lore to chew on than Larian has officially provided, which is exactly how Larian seems to want it.

Fans of strategy games and deep RPG lore will want to keep a close eye on any further trailer breakdowns as the community continues pulling at threads. If Wolfheart's reading holds up, Larian buried one of the game's biggest reveals in a crown that most people watched without a second thought.
