Fable Main Quest and Side Quest Length Revealed by Playground Games

Playground Games has put a number on one of the most-asked questions about the Fable reboot: how long is it? At a press Q&A during Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, associate game director Will Kennedy broke down the content split clearly. Fable will offer roughly 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, with an additional 15-20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration on top of that.

That puts the total structured content somewhere between 30 and 40 hours, depending on your pace. Beyond that, Kennedy and fellow associate game director Craig Littler made it clear the game doesn't really end there.

What Playground actually said

Kennedy's exact breakdown: "We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay. And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want."

Littler went further. When an attendee at the Q&A pushed back and called Fable "not a huge game," Littler responded directly: "As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do."

The life systems they're referring to include marriage, family-building, property ownership, NPC relationships, and jobs. Bowerstone alone features 400 fully voiced persistent NPCs, and players can purchase up to 130 homes and 30 businesses across the city. These aren't one-time interactions. They're ongoing systems with no defined endpoint.

The 15-20 hour main quest and 15-20 hours of side content are two separate pools, not a combined total. Players who complete both can expect roughly 30-40 hours of structured gameplay before the life sim systems take over.

How this compares to the original trilogy

Here's the thing: a 15-20 hour main campaign is actually the longest in the franchise's history. The original Fable from 2004, Fable II, and Fable III each clocked in at roughly 12-14 hours on the critical path. The reboot extends that by a meaningful margin.

So the reboot is longer than any previous entry on both counts. That context matters when reading the community reaction, which has been genuinely split.

The community reaction is complicated

Some players are disappointed. The comparison that keeps coming up is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, which offers well over 100 hours of content. Against that benchmark, 30-40 hours sounds modest for a flagship RPG.

Others are pushing back on that framing. The argument is that Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is an outlier, and that a tighter, more focused campaign is preferable to a sprawling open world padded with repetitive content. Both positions are defensible.

What most players miss in this debate is that Playground is explicitly positioning the life sim layer as the game's actual long-term hook. The main quest gets you into Albion. The side content fills it out. The life systems are where Playground expects players to genuinely lose themselves.

The risk with that pitch is real. "You can play forever" is easy to say and hard to deliver. If the life sim systems feel shallow or repetitive once the main story wraps, that 30-40 hour ceiling will sting. If they feel genuinely rewarding, the complaints about length will disappear fast.

What Playground showed at Gamescom

Playground didn't just talk about length. Xbox released an 18-minute gameplay walkthrough featuring a quest through Bowerstone, demonstrating the returning Strength, Skill, and Will combat system played twice with different loadouts. The demo also showed off NPC interactions and the revamped world of Albion, which leans hard into dark humor and British charm.

The tone is clearly distinct from the original trilogy while still feeling familiar. NPCs react differently depending on how you treat them, and the world appears to have genuine reactivity built in rather than just cosmetic moral choices.

Release window and access details

Fable launches February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It's a day-one Game Pass title, so subscribers won't need a separate purchase. Premium Edition buyers get five days of early access starting February 18, 2027. Xbox Play Anywhere support means a single purchase covers both Xbox Series X/S and PC.

For players planning their approach to the game, the Fable guides collection will be the place to track quest walkthroughs, life sim tips, and build breakdowns as launch gets closer. If you want a broader look at what's coming across all platforms, the full gaming guides hub has you covered.
