Fire Emblem Heroes $1 Billion in Revenue

Nintendo’s mobile strategy RPG Fire Emblem Heroes has reached its ninth anniversary, marking a milestone of over $1.2 billion in lifetime player spending. Released globally on February 2, 2017, the title has become Nintendo’s most successful mobile game, outperforming other mobile releases such as Mario Kart Tour, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Super Mario Run. Developed by Intelligent Systems in partnership with DeNA, the game successfully translated the Fire Emblem franchise into a mobile gacha format, appealing to both longtime fans and new players.

The game’s anniversary is accompanied by special in-game events, returning gacha banners, and login bonuses, as well as promotional efforts linked to a spinoff title. These updates continue to support player engagement and monetisation, ensuring that even nearly a decade after its launch, Fire Emblem Heroes remains a central part of Nintendo’s mobile strategy.

Revenue Trends and Regional Performance

Fire Emblem Heroes achieved its peak revenue in its first year, generating $265.1 million in its initial 365 days. The game’s most successful day came shortly after launch on February 10, 2017, when it earned $3.3 million. Revenue declined by 12% in its second year to $233.7 million and then dropped more sharply by 34% in year three to $155.1 million. Year four marked a slight increase to $155.4 million, coinciding with the introduction of the FEH Pass subscription system and the inclusion of characters from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which had recently become the best-selling strategy RPG in the series.

Approximately half of the game’s lifetime revenue comes from Japan, with the United States contributing 36% and Canada accounting for around 3%. Despite a decline in annual revenue over the years, the game still brings in significant sums, with $47.9 million generated in its ninth year, about 18% of first-year earnings. This sustained performance underscores the effectiveness of the game’s gacha model and subscription system.

Spinoff Comparisons and Monetisation Strategy

Nintendo’s newer mobile release, Fire Emblem Shadows, has not seen the same financial success. The real-time social deduction game earned roughly $516,000 in its first four months. Unlike Fire Emblem Heroes, Shadows uses a battle pass system that provides early access to one new character per month, rather than relying on gacha mechanics. This contrast highlights the continued strength of Heroes’ model, which combines character-based gacha pulls with a subscription service to maintain player spending over time.

The longevity of Fire Emblem Heroes can largely be attributed to its regular updates, attention to fan-favorite characters, and integration of major console releases into mobile content. Characters from Three Houses and other Fire Emblem titles have consistently driven engagement, particularly during major gacha events like the annual “Choose Your Legends.”

Ongoing Updates and Anniversary Events

The ninth anniversary coincides with version 10.1 of the game, which introduced a new story campaign called Book 10. The anniversary update includes returning gacha banners, daily challenges, and map completion rewards to encourage player participation. The FEH Channel presentation on YouTube provided details of upcoming content, including the winners of Choose Your Legends 10, where players vote on which characters will receive alternate versions.

The top winner for 2026 was Tsubasa from Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, who received 21,381 votes, the highest for a single character since 2022. The game also ran a Shadows Cup event in January 2026, a cross-promotional voting event tied to the spinoff, where players selected legacy characters to receive alternate forms inspired by Shadows’ design. Winners from this event are confirmed to appear in Fire Emblem Heroes, even if they do not debut in the spinoff itself.

Future Outlook for Fire Emblem Heroes

Despite approaching a decade in service, Fire Emblem Heroes remains a key asset in Nintendo’s mobile lineup. The upcoming release of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave on Switch 2 is expected to introduce new characters that will be added to the game’s gacha system, continuing the pipeline of content from console to mobile. Regular updates, fan engagement through voting events, and the FEH Pass subscription model suggest that the title will maintain relevance and financial performance well into the coming years.
