Fired Rockstar Devs Tell GTA 6 Fans: Skip the Boycott, Back Our Legal Fight

Fired Rockstar Devs Tell GTA 6 Fans: Skip the Boycott, Back Our Legal Fight

A group of 34 developers fired from Rockstar Games last year has a direct message for fans ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6 launching on November 19, 2026: don't boycott the game. Buy a t-shirt instead, and help fund the legal proceedings that could decide whether their dismissals were lawful.

The merchandise, available through the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), puts all proceeds toward the ongoing employment tribunal. The workers are making their position unmistakably clear. "Win justice for the people who helped make it," one representative says, with another adding: “We spent years pouring our hard work, skill, and creativity into making GTA, and we want people to experience the universe that we helped build.”

What the devs say happened to them

Of the 34 people affected, 31 are based in Britain and three are in Canada. Their dismissal last year triggered protests and demonstrations outside Rockstar's Edinburgh studio almost immediately. The workers claim they were let go "without representation, evidence or a chance to respond," a characterization that Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive has disputed, citing gross misconduct.

The timing raised immediate suspicions. The layoffs came as employees were organizing around union activity, and the IWGB publicly stated it would not back down from challenging the dismissals. That fight has now reached its final stage.

September hearing could set a precedent

The last tribunal hearing is scheduled for September, where the 34 former employees will make their final arguments that Rockstar acted unlawfully. The outcome matters beyond this specific group of workers. A ruling in their favor could have real implications for how games studios handle union organizing across the UK industry.

important
The workers are explicitly asking fans NOT to boycott GTA 6. A boycott, they argue, punishes everyone who worked on the game, including those still employed. The legal route is the one they want pursued.

Here's the thing: this isn't a story about fans being asked to choose sides between loving a game and caring about the people who built it. The workers themselves are rejecting that framing. "If you love GTA but hate union-busting, don't boycott the game, support our legal battle instead," the group says in the video accompanying the t-shirt launch.

What this means for players ahead of launch

For anyone who has already locked in a pre-order or is still deciding, the workers' message is straightforward: play the game. The labor dispute runs on a separate track from the product itself, and the people at the center of it want the work they contributed to actually reach players.

What most players miss in situations like this is that a boycott's financial impact lands on the entire studio, not just the decision-makers. The former devs clearly understand that, which is why they're channeling fan support toward a legal fund rather than a sales protest.

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. If you're planning to pick it up and want to get ahead on what's coming, the GTA 6 pre-order guide covers everything you need to know about editions, platforms, and how to secure your copy. The September tribunal will likely conclude before launch, so there may be a verdict in hand before most players even boot the game for the first time.
