Rockstar Games is dropping one of the longest-running control annoyances in the Grand Theft Auto series. Grand Theft Auto 6 is replacing the franchise's notorious face-button sprint with a standard left-stick click, the same input virtually every other major action game has used for years.
The sprint problem nobody could ignore
If you have played any mainline GTA title, you know exactly what this is about. Sprinting in the series has always required either holding or mashing a face button rather than clicking the left analog stick. It sounds like a minor gripe until you switch from practically any other open-world game and your muscle memory immediately betrays you. The face-button sprint was a design choice rooted in the PS2 era, and it never really made sense to carry it forward.
Here's the thing: this kind of control friction adds up. Every time you want to bolt from the police or just cross a street faster, you have to consciously override the instinct to click the stick. After 13 years between mainline entries, players were not exactly hoping Rockstar would preserve that particular tradition.
What's actually changing
The new control setup maps sprinting to the left analog stick click, which is exactly where players expect it in 2026. The change surfaced through footage shared by Italian YouTuber MikeShowSha, and it is a straightforward quality-of-life improvement that removes a genuine barrier to enjoying the game.
The sprint fix is part of a broader set of changes arriving with the game. GTA 6 also brings a map roughly three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's, a new Criminal Profile system that tracks how players approach the game, a physical-fitness mechanic, and yes, throwable dog poop. The sprint change might be the smallest item on that list by word count, but it is the one that will affect every single play session from the first minute.
Why this one actually matters
Control scheme updates in long-running series tend to get overlooked in the hype cycle. Halo adjusted its control layout across generations, and those shifts quietly improved the experience for millions of players without making many headlines. GTA 6 doing the same with sprinting is the kind of change that will feel obvious within five minutes of playing and completely invisible after ten.
What most players miss is how much a single unintuitive input can color an entire game. When the control scheme fights you, the world feels less responsive. Fixing sprinting does not just make running easier. It makes the whole game feel tighter.
With the November 19 launch approaching, there is plenty more to sort through before release. The GTA 6 editions and pre-order bonuses guide breaks down exactly what comes with the Standard and Ultimate Editions if you are still deciding how to buy in.
