Indian Gaming Market Set to Reach $9.2 Billion by 2029

India's gaming market, currently valued at $3.8 billion, is on track to hit $9.2 billion by 2029. That's a 20% compound annual growth rate, and it's happening faster than the rest of India's new media sector, which is growing at 16% annually. Gaming now represents nearly 30% of India's $12.5 billion media market, making it the fastest-growing segment by a significant margin.

Projected $9.2 Billion by 2029

India's gaming trajectory mirrors China's explosive growth from two decades ago, and the sector is closing in on Bollywood's revenue. The country added 23 million gamers in the past year alone, bringing the total player base to 591 million. Of those, 148 million are paying users.

Weekly gaming time jumped 30% year-over-year to 13 hours per week—double what Indian users spend on social platforms. In-app purchases surged 41%, driven primarily by mid-core mobile games that appeal to India's rapidly expanding audience. That revenue spike is now the fastest-growing category in the market.

Mobile dominates. India is the world's second-largest mobile gaming market with 15.2 billion downloads, far ahead of Brazil and the U.S. Android devices hold roughly 90% market share, fueled by affordable smartphones in the $200–$400 range and some of the cheapest mobile data costs globally. That combination has turned India into a mobile-first gaming powerhouse.

Shifts in demographics and consumer behavior

Younger players—especially first-time earners between 18 and 30—are driving engagement. Female gamers now make up 44% of the user base, and 66% of players live outside major metro areas. Gaming culture is spreading beyond India's urban centers.

Digital payments are the default. 83% of users pay for in-game content via digital wallets or UPI. Ad tolerance is high: 47% of players prefer ad-supported models over paid subscriptions, and microtransactions continue to climb.

Market trends and game development

Demand for culturally relevant games is rising, and developers are responding. Mayhem Studios is building a battle royale game rooted in Indian themes, part of a broader push toward locally resonant content. Players want games that reflect their own experiences, and developers are shifting focus to build IP around Indian culture rather than generic global templates.

Indian studios are moving away from contract work for international publishers and toward independent IP development. Many founders previously worked on outsourced projects and are now leveraging India's competitive development costs to build for the domestic market. There's also a wave of diaspora developers returning home, alongside international investors looking to establish early positions in the region.

Opportunities in esports and social gaming

Esports remains a small slice of the overall market, but viewership is growing fast. Social gaming platforms are seeing heavy engagement, with players spending more time on interactive social experiences than traditional social media. Casual gaming time increased 20% in 2024, reflecting broader trends toward community-oriented and interactive play.

Key Considerations for Future Growth

Lumikai Insignia Summit and industry collaboration

The annual Insignia Summit brought together figures like filmmaker SS Rajamouli and representatives from global gaming and tech sectors, highlighting international interest in India's market. Partnerships with Google and Deloitte support the research behind these projections, which draw from nearly 3,000 mobile users, third-party analytics, and expert interviews. The summit aims to connect investors with opportunities in this high-growth environment.

India's gaming industry is powered by mobile access, low data costs, and rising engagement with culturally relevant content. As global and local investment increases, the development landscape is diversifying, creating conditions for sustained innovation and growth.

Lumikai's Data Highlights

Relevance to web3 gaming

India's gaming boom presents a clear opportunity for the web3 gaming ecosystem. High engagement from young, mobile-first audiences and a fast-growing segment of digital-first, in-app-purchasing players align well with decentralized, player-owned economies.

The popularity of digital wallets and UPI for in-game payments suggests readiness for blockchain-enabled transactions. High tolerance for ad-supported and microtransaction-based models fits naturally with play-to-earn and NFT mechanics. As Indian developers focus on locally resonant IP and ownership models, web3 can provide tools to build sustainable, community-driven economies that reward players and creators, positioning India as a key hub in the global web3 gaming space.
