Kaschei: Free Visual Novel You Need to Download Now

Gamejams keep producing some of the most genuinely weird and interesting narrative games out there, and Kaschei is a strong argument for why you should keep an eye on itch.io. Created by Bagenzo and Middle Sea Software for Toxic Yuri VN Jam 2, this free visual novel is not a tidy, linear story. It is an openly piecemeal arrangement of linked fictions, mutually informing and occasionally sabotaging each other across different interfaces and timeframes. If you enjoy RPG games that push narrative structure to its limits, Kaschei is operating in that same spirit of experimentation, just without the combat.

What Kaschei actually is

The premise sounds simple enough: a story about belonging, hollowness, and resentment, told through something resembling an instant messenger interface. The execution is anything but simple. Kaschei layers fresh versions of itself over what came before, introducing new incarnations that feel both binary and consecutive. Your choices are minimal, mostly amounting to what you open next, but that restraint is the point. The game is less about branching paths and more about the order in which you piece things together.

The tone lands somewhere between epistolary fiction and sci-fantasy, with a forensic investigation quality that fans of games like The Roottrees Are Dead will recognize immediately. Here is the thing: Kaschei is not trying to be those games. It borrows the investigative texture but applies it to relationship angst and internal estrangement, which is a genuinely unusual combination.

Font choices, text color, and text sound effects carry a surprising amount of emotional weight throughout. The music is also worth mentioning specifically because it does real work in shifting the atmosphere between sections.

The toxic yuri context

If you are new to the genre label, toxic yuri covers stories that dig into trauma, destructive relationships, jealousy, and rage between girls. The jam that produced Kaschei explicitly welcomed stories ranging from inexperienced romance going badly wrong all the way to intentionally abusive dynamics. The framing is confrontational by design, and Kaschei leans into that emotional intensity without softening the edges.

What makes it work is how the game channels that relationship angst into structural experimentation. The narrative is so busy talking to itself, interrupting itself, that it requires a kind of reception layer that addresses the player directly. That layer has a wonderfully condescending characterization of you as an inexplicable basement dweller, which is funny and pointed in equal measure.

tip
Kaschei was built for Toxic Yuri VN Jam 2, a jam specifically designed for stories exploring intense, often destructive relationships. The game is free to download on itch.io.

A few caveats worth knowing

The game ends abruptly. Most players will finish it across a couple of evenings, which likely reflects both the gamejam timeframe and the possibility that some foreshadowing is easy to miss on a first pass. That brevity is the one genuine criticism worth flagging, because the structural ambition on display makes you want more time inside the system it builds.

The piecemeal nature of Kaschei, files spread across your Downloads folder like a deliberately scattered puzzle, will not appeal to everyone. Players who want clean narrative delivery with a clear progress bar will bounce off it fast. For everyone else, the disorientation is the experience.

Kaschei is free. The risk is zero, and the payoff for the right reader is a genuinely original piece of interactive fiction that treats the visual novel format as something still worth pushing. If you want more experimental narrative games to track alongside it, the gaming guides hub is a good place to find coverage of titles operating in similar spaces.
