Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Deep Dive

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is scheduled to release on December 4 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Stephen Totilo recently spent two hours with the game in New York City, providing an early look at its gameplay, exploration, and design. While much of the game remains hidden, the preview offered insight into what players can expect from the next chapter in the Metroid Prime series.

Preview Context and Comparisons

Totilo’s experience with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond reflects a cautious optimism similar to previous Nintendo previews, such as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (2024) and Tears of the Kingdom (2023). In the case of Echoes of Wisdom, early previews highlighted a system for collecting and conjuring items, which felt less impactful after release. In contrast, Tears of the Kingdom revealed hidden areas not shown during previews, adding new layers of depth post-launch. Totilo notes that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond appears to follow this pattern, leaving much of its content unrevealed and open to discovery.

The Introductory Sequence

During the preview, Totilo first played the game on a Switch 2 in handheld mode. The opening sequence follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she lands on a planet where Galactic Federation soldiers are engaged in combat with alien forces. The sequence combines high-action combat with environmental storytelling, leading to the detonation of a mysterious device that sets up the narrative for the main adventure. This section mirrors content seen in prior public showcases, offering a structured introduction to the game’s mechanics and world.

Exploration and Gameplay in Fury Green

The bulk of the preview took place on a docked Switch 2, focusing on the Fury Green jungle on the planet Viewros. Players navigate the area in first-person perspective, scanning plants, animals, and other environmental elements - a core mechanic of the Metroid Prime series.

Samus can also acquire upgrades, including missiles and morph ball bombs, which expand exploration and combat options. Totilo encountered a boss during the session, demonstrating how the game balances action with exploration. The level design emphasizes environmental detail and interactivity, from insects carrying leaves across logs to doors that can be unlocked using Samus’ psychic visor and glove.

Visuals and Technical Performance

The Fury Green area highlighted Retro Studios’ attention to visual design. On a docked Switch 2, the game ran at 1080p, with the option to support 4K output. The jungle environment displayed lush vegetation, realistic lighting, and small interactive details, enhancing immersion without distracting from core gameplay. Totilo noted that the combination of exploration and environmental storytelling remains central to the Metroid Prime experience.

Limited Scope of the Preview

Although the two-hour session was engaging, Totilo emphasized that the preview represented only a small portion of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Nintendo appears to be withholding much of the game, leaving players to discover additional layers, areas, and gameplay mechanics upon release. The preview offered a glimpse of the classic Metroid Prime formula enhanced with new abilities and modernized visuals, but the full scope of the game remains uncertain.
