The last time Minecraft added a new dimension, the iPhone 4 had just launched and Skyrim was still a year away. That dimension was The End. Now, 14 years later, Mojang has finally announced a fourth one: The Sift.

The reveal came during Minecraft LIVE Fall 2026, and while details are still thin, the announcement alone is genuinely significant. For over a decade, players have had exactly three dimensions to move between: the Overworld, the Nether, and The End. The Sift changes that for the first time since the game launched in 2011.

What we know about The Sift so far

Mojang hasn't flooded the internet with specifics yet, but the broad strokes are clear. The Sift will bring new biomes, new mobs, and a new visual identity that looks noticeably more colorful than the existing dimensions. New blocks are confirmed as part of the package too, which means builders are already mentally redecorating.

Here's the thing: the first proper look at The Sift won't come through a Minecraft update. It's actually going to appear in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches on September 29. That's a smart move from Mojang, using the sequel to the spinoff dungeon crawler as a preview window before the dimension makes its way into the main game.

The gap between The End and The Sift

To put this in perspective: The Nether has been part of Minecraft since 2010, and The End arrived with the full game release in November 2011. For 14 years, every new biome, mob, and block Mojang added existed within those same three dimensional spaces. The Caves and Cliffs update, the Wild Update, the Nether Update, the recent Wilderness Bound update (covered in our Minecraft Wilderness Bound update guide) - all of it expanded what was already there rather than opening a new door.

The Sift is that new door. Whether it ends up as transformative as the Nether or more niche like The End depends entirely on what Mojang builds into it, but the structural shift matters regardless of the final content count.

Everything else Mojang announced at LIVE

The Sift wasn't the only thing on the table at Minecraft LIVE. The next main Game Drop update is bringing underground ice caves to the Overworld, along with a new frozen zombie variant. That's a more grounded addition compared to an entirely new dimension, but ice cave architecture and a new mob type will keep the builder and combat crowds occupied while The Sift's full rollout takes shape.

Mojang also teased a new Minecraft Creator Platform, designed to make it easier for creators to build, manage, and share custom content. The pitch sounds like a direct response to how Roblox and Fortnite have built ecosystems around user-generated content, and Mojang clearly wants a more structured piece of that space.

For players who have been pushing the game's limits through mods in the meantime, our best Minecraft mods guide covers 52 picks that have been filling the dimension-shaped gap for years.

The Sift has a lot to live up to. Keep an eye on the Minecraft Dungeons II launch on September 29 for the first real look at what Mojang has been building, and check our full Minecraft guides collection as more details land.
