What do Straw Beds and Cushions actually do?

Straw Beds

Straw Beds are single-use beds that let you skip the night without resetting your spawn point. That one property makes them extremely practical for long exploration runs: sleep through the dark, stay alive, and your spawn anchor stays exactly where you set it. They cannot be used in the Nether or the End and will be destroyed if you attempt it.

Crafting is straightforward: 3 Hay Bales produce 4 Straw Beds. A Hoe breaks them faster than other tools. You can also find them pre-placed inside Abandoned Camp tents, which means early-game explorers have access to them before they've even gathered the materials to craft their own.

Cushions

Cushions are a new placeable entity that lets you actually sit on the ground rather than crouching on stairs to simulate it. They come in all 16 wool colors and are crafted from 3 Wool Slabs of the same color.
