Navirou's descendant takes center stage
Capcom opened the latest Capcom Spotlight with a proper surprise for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection players. A brand-new paid DLC side-story titled Additional Side Story: Rudy is live right now, and it brings with it a free update that changes how the main game world behaves.
Game director Ryozo Tsujimoto spelled out exactly what the DLC is about: "Rudy's ancestry can be traced back to a legendary Felyne that once saved the world. Rudy's ancestor is none other than Navirou from Monster Hunter Stories." That single line connects the young Felyne companion directly to the original 2016 game, giving longtime fans a thread that runs across the entire series.
What the Rudy side-story actually covers
The DLC explores the origin of the "Royal Felyne" lineage, tracing it back through Rudy's bloodline to Navirou. Tsujimoto described the setup: "Due to a series of bizarre phenomena, fate reunites Navirou with his descendant, Rudy, sending the story down an unexpected path."
Nergigante appears in the trailer as well. Here's the thing though: the Elder Dragon won't be available as a rideable Monster. You can challenge it in battle, but don't expect to bond with it. Capcom was upfront about that distinction, so temper expectations accordingly.
Players who already purchased the Deluxe Edition or Premium Deluxe Edition get access to the DLC today without an additional purchase. Everyone else picks it up separately.
Royal Monsters arrive in the field via free update
The free update landing alongside the DLC is arguably the bigger gameplay shift for players already deep in the main story. Royal Monsters now appear in the field, not just as scripted encounters. That alone changes how exploration feels.
The update also reworks the final battle. Load a completed save file and you'll find a harder version of that fight waiting. Clear it, and almost all existing monsters in the game transform into Royal Monsters on the field. Tsujimoto framed it as a direct challenge: "Challenge yourself against invasive monsters and Calamitous Elder Dragons that have transformed into Royal Monsters."
That's a meaningful endgame hook. Players who thought they were done now have a reason to return.
Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance gets a 2027 window
Capcom also used the Spotlight to update fans on the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, titled Ascendance. The team confirmed it's in active development, targeting a 2027 release. The expansion continues the main story and brings new areas, monsters, hunter actions, and the introduction of Master Rank quests.
Separately, Capcom recently confirmed a Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds is in the works, so the franchise is clearly operating on multiple fronts heading into next year.
What this means for Stories 3 right now
For players still working through Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, this week's drop is worth paying attention to. A lore-connected side-story, a free endgame challenge mode, and Royal Monsters now populating the field all at once is a meaningful content push. The Rudy DLC in particular lands differently if you played the original Monster Hunter Stories, since the Navirou connection adds real weight to what could have been a straightforward side quest.
If you're still getting your footing in the game, the Monster Hunter Stories 3 strategy guides cover everything from weapon mechanics to monster encounters to help you get ready before taking on the harder endgame content.
