Believe the hype for Wardogs, possibly the next great multiplayer FPS | PC Gamer

The anti-pitch that sold everyone

Most developers spend their entire marketing budget telling you why their game is the best thing you'll ever play. Bulkhead did the opposite. The studio behind the upcoming tactical milsim Wardogs published a video titled "10 Reasons NOT to Buy" their own game, and the result was Wardogs immediately jumping to Steam's top-selling premium game spot once pre-orders opened.

That's not irony. That's a studio that knows exactly what it's made and who it's for.

Wardogs 100-player combat

Wardogs is a 100-player tactical FPS from Bulkhead Interactive, the team behind the WW2 shooter Battalion 1944. Think Arma 3's King of the Hill mod crossed with Battlefield's moment-to-moment gunplay, built around a persistent in-match economy where every kill, heal, and supply run earns you cash you can lose on your next death. It had already built up over 800,000 Steam wishlists before pre-orders even opened.

What Bulkhead actually said

Here's the thing: the "10 reasons" video isn't a gimmick. Bulkhead laid out real, specific concerns that would genuinely put certain players off, and delivered them without corporate hedging.

The studio was upfront that early access content will be limited. After the September 10 launch, the team plans to focus on bug fixes and community feedback before a new map arrives, and players shouldn't expect regular content drops throughout early access. Their words, not a critic's summary.

On pricing, Wardogs launches at $39.99. Bulkhead's position was direct: "If the price feels too high for an early access game, please don't buy it yet." They also told players that if the beta doesn't click, just refund it. The closed beta runs August 21 to August 23 for anyone who pre-orders.

The player count section was probably the most self-aware part. Bulkhead told players upfront that numbers will drop after launch, that influencers will call it a dead game for clicks, and that none of that means the game is failing. Their stated goal is a sustainable 3,000 to 5,000 daily concurrent players who actually love the game, not a flash launch followed by collapse.

tip
Wardogs will have zero in-game monetization during early access. Cosmetic camos cannot be purchased, only earned through play. An optional supporter's edition is the sole exception.

The monetization section was equally clear. No purchasable gold bars, no camo bundles, no pay-to-win anything during early access. Post-1.0, Bulkhead acknowledged they'll need to cover ongoing costs somehow, but made no promises they couldn't keep yet.

Perhaps the most disarming part was the studio addressing Battalion 1944 directly. That game launched with Kickstarter hype, fell to 50-200 daily players, saw publisher relationships collapse, and went dark on communication for too long. Bulkhead didn't spin it. They said: if you still don't trust us because of that, don't rush to buy Wardogs.

What kind of game Wardogs actually is

For context, Wardogs is directly inspired by the Arma 3 King of the Hill mod, where three teams fight over a shared capture zone on a massive map. The team with the most players inside the zone scores, and a smaller "hot zone" within it doubles your scoring value. That's where most of the fighting happens.

Wardogs loadout economy system

The economy is what separates it from everything else in the genre. You earn in-match cash for kills, objective time, heals, and transport runs. You spend that cash on your loadout before spawning back in. Die with expensive gear and you lose it. The financial stakes create natural incentives to stick near teammates and play smart without the game ever forcing you to.

If you've played Squad, you'll recognize the logistical layer: FOB construction, supply lines, vehicle coordination. But Wardogs sits closer to Battlefield on the accessibility spectrum. The gunplay is snappy, the objective is immediately readable, and you don't need 40 hours of Arma experience to contribute. Early access launches with three maps, each with three variations, and supports local voice chat.

If grinding isn't your thing and you need regular content drops to stay engaged, Wardogs will feel thin in its early months. Bulkhead said as much themselves.

Why this approach worked

This is where it gets interesting. The "don't buy it" video became the best possible advertisement because it filtered the audience before they spent money. Players who watched it and still pre-ordered did so knowing the limitations. That means lower refund rates, a more committed early community, and less rage when player counts dip in month three.

Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer put it plainly: "Wardogs has never been about playing it safe. Rather than asking players to take our word for it, every pre-order includes access to the Closed Beta, so they can get hands-on, see exactly where the game is today and make up their own minds."

The gaming industry has spent years training players to distrust early access launches. Cyberpunk 2077, No Man's Sky at launch, countless survival games that took $20 and went quiet. Bulkhead's approach is the logical response to that history: radical transparency as a trust-building mechanism. The fact that it immediately converted into top-seller status suggests players are hungry for developers who actually talk to them like adults.

For comparison, other hardcore FPS games launching into early access right now are fighting for attention with feature trailers and influencer drops. Wardogs got there by telling people it might not be ready for them yet. If you're the type of player who gravitates toward milsims, persistent economies, and communities that stick around for years rather than weeks, that pitch lands differently than any highlight reel would.

The real question is whether Bulkhead can back it up. The beta starting August 21 will be the first real test.
