"Demand for the PS5 physical Revered Edition of Mortal Shell II has exceeded expectations and unfortunately supply across a number of retailers has now been fully reserved." That's the word from publisher Playstack on the official Mortal Shell social channels, and it lands at a particularly pointed moment in PlayStation history.
For fans of Cold Symmetry's upcoming soulslike, Day of the Shell and the broader Mortal Shell universe, the sell-out news is a genuine win. The Revered Edition isn't just a disc in a box. It bundles a physical artbook, art cards, and a selection of digital bonuses, making it a collector's package that clearly resonated with players who still want something tangible on their shelf.

What sold out, and what's still available
The base physical edition of Mortal Shell 2 remains available in most territories, so you can still own the game on disc if that matters to you. The Revered Edition, though, is effectively gone. Playstack confirmed that stock across multiple retailers has been fully reserved, and because physical manufacturing timelines don't bend easily, the team says "there is a very low chance of additional physical copies becoming available before the game's release" on August 20, 2026.
The publisher was careful to be transparent about who actually controls the restock decision. "We are working with our distribution partner to review ongoing demand and we'll update as soon as we hear their decision on next steps," the statement reads. "To be clear, there is no guarantee of a stock replenishment plan after launch as this decision is not ours to make."
That's honest, at least. Don't hold your breath for a surprise restock announcement the week before launch.
The Sony backdrop that makes this sting more
Here's the thing: this sell-out is happening directly against the backdrop of Sony's announcement that PlayStation consoles will stop receiving disc-based physical releases from January 2028. That decision has been generating sustained backlash for weeks, and the Mortal Shell 2 situation feeds directly into that conversation.
The timing is hard to ignore. Players who might have defaulted to digital in previous years are now actively seeking out physical copies, partly out of genuine preference and partly as a reaction to knowing the option disappears in under two years. A sell-out of the most expensive physical version of a third-party soulslike, well ahead of launch, is a pretty clear signal that the appetite for physical media on PS5 is not as dead as Sony's roadmap implies.
The original Mortal Shell launched in 2020 during a period when digital was already dominant. Cold Symmetry and Playstack may have simply used that sales split as their baseline for estimating physical demand this time around, and underestimated how much the current climate would shift buyer behavior.
What this actually means for the game
Stripped of the broader PS5 politics, this is genuinely good news for Cold Symmetry. Selling out a premium physical edition before launch means the game has real commercial momentum heading into August 20. The Steam demo drew strong reactions, with players noting the removal of a stamina bar, improved enemy variety, and some notably creative save point design. That enthusiasm is clearly translating into pre-launch purchases.
The soulslike space outside FromSoftware has been building a serious track record. Lies of P proved the genre has room for multiple players at the top, and Mortal Shell 2 looks positioned to continue that trend.
For anyone still hunting a physical copy, the base disc edition is your best bet right now. If you want to go deeper into the game ahead of launch, the Day of the Shell guide collection has resources worth checking before August 20 arrives.
