Cory Barlog dropped the news at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday: Santa Monica Studio is making another God of War game starring Kratos. The Ghost of Sparta isn't done yet, and this new project will connect directly to the events of God of War Laufey, which also picked up a firm release date at the same panel.
What Barlog actually said at the panel
Barlog, who serves as head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, kept the details deliberately sparse. No title, no trailer, no gameplay. Just the confirmation that Kratos will lead another entry in the franchise after God of War Laufey wraps up its story. The key piece of information here is the narrative connection: whatever comes next for Kratos will grow directly out of Laufey's events, meaning the upcoming spin-off isn't a detour but a setup.
That framing matters. Laufey follows Faye (Kratos' late wife) on a journey through the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, where she discovers that the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now under threat. The game appears to be laying pipe for wherever Kratos heads next, and based on the mythologies Laufey brushes up against, Egyptian and Tibetan gods are very much in the picture.
The broader God of War timeline right now
Santa Monica has been busy. God of War Ragnarök launched in 2022 and closed out the Norse arc. Earlier this year, Sony Santa Monica and Mega Cat Studios released God of War Sons of Sparta, a prequel featuring a young Kratos. A full remake of the original Greek trilogy is also in the works, though that project remains light on details.
So the franchise roadmap looks something like this:
- God of War Sons of Sparta (released)
- God of War Laufey (PS5, Feb. 16, 2027)
- New Kratos-led title (post-Laufey, no release window yet)
- Original Greek trilogy remake (in development, no details)
That's a lot of God of War on the horizon, and Sony clearly sees this as a long-running franchise rather than a story wrapping up.
Where Kratos could go next
Here's the thing: after spending two full games in Norse mythology and tearing through the Greek pantheon before that, the question of what mythology comes next is genuinely exciting. Laufey's story threading in Egyptian and Tibetan gods isn't subtle. Santa Monica is signposting the next arena, and the idea of Kratos going up against Ra or Osiris is the kind of premise that writes itself.
What most players miss in this announcement is how deliberate the structure feels. Laufey isn't just a spin-off to keep the brand warm. It appears to be a full narrative bridge, the same way God of War (2018) recontextualized everything about Kratos before Ragnarök paid it all off. The new Kratos game will likely inherit whatever Laufey sets in motion.

What this means for PS5 owners
Two confirmed God of War games are now on the PS5 roadmap, with Laufey arriving February 2027 as the next playable entry. The new Kratos title has no window yet, but given the explicit story connection to Laufey, a 2028 or 2029 window feels realistic if development is already underway.
Barlog's announcement is light on specifics by design. Santa Monica isn't ready to show anything yet, and the Laufey panel was the right place to confirm the future without overshadowing the game that's actually releasing next year. Expect more details to surface once Laufey is closer to launch.
