New Games of August 2026 Worth Playing

Summer gaming droughts are supposed to be a thing. August is supposed to be the quiet month where you finally catch up on your backlog. Not this year. August 2026 is arriving with one of the most stacked single-month lineups in recent memory, headlined by Elden Ring finally touching down on Nintendo Switch 2 and a complete edition of Lies of P that packages the base game and its Overture DLC together for the first time.

Here's the lowdown on every notable release hitting shelves and storefronts this August, from the massive to the quietly interesting.

The headliners that matter most

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition drops August 28, and it's genuinely one of the biggest announcements to come out of any Nintendo Direct this generation. FromSoftware's open-world Soulslike was originally planned for a 2025 Switch 2 launch before the developer delayed it to address performance. The wait appears to have been worth it. The Tarnished Edition bundles the base game alongside the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, meaning new players get the definitive version from day one.

Five days earlier on August 6, Lies of P: Complete Edition goes live digitally. The Soulslike set in a twisted Belle Epoque city of Krat has earned a serious reputation since its original release, and the Switch 2 version collects the base game and the Overture DLC in one package. Physical edition buyers will need to hold until October 2, but digital players can jump in immediately.

The Lies of P physical edition does not launch alongside the digital version. If you are waiting for a boxed copy, that release is October 2, not August 6.

Remasters and re-releases worth your attention

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered arrives on Switch 2 on August 11, bringing Bethesda's 2006 RPG to Nintendo's hardware with updated visuals and all story expansions included, covering both Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. For players who missed the remaster on other platforms earlier this year, this is a clean entry point.

Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster also landed on July 23, technically just before August, making it a strong lead-in for the month. The Switch 2 version updates visuals, rearranges the music, adds quality-of-life features, and removes random encounters entirely. If you have been putting off revisiting Spira, this is the version to play.

The games flying under the radar

Duskfade releases August 13, and it is the kind of game that tends to get buried by bigger launches. The 3D action platformer follows a character named Zirian using a massive back-mounted sword to fight bosses across a colorful magical world. The handheld form factor of Switch 2 feels like a natural fit here.

The Witch's Bakery follows on August 20, casting players as a witch named Luna who opens a bakery in Paris and uses her ability to see and heal emotions through baking. The game splits time across three daily phases and carries a visual warmth that is hard to ignore from its trailers alone.

Then there is Big Walk on August 4, a co-op exploration game from House House (the studio behind Untitled Goose Game) that emphasizes hanging out with friends, solving environmental puzzles, and finding gadgets. Cross-platform play is confirmed.

Strategy, action, and everything in between

Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 2 arrives August 27, bundling Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker onto Switch 2. For players who have been working through the series chronologically, this fills in a long-missing gap in Konami's catalogue on Nintendo hardware.

Also on August 27, Brigandine: Abyss launches as a strategy RPG where players choose from six heroes and command units across a continent-spanning conflict. The Brigandine series has a dedicated following, and this entry appears to be the most ambitious yet.

What most players miss is that Disgaea Mayhem hit on July 23 with a playable demo already available. The action RPG from NIS America leans into its silly premise hard, and if you are on the fence, the demo is worth 20 minutes of your time before August fills your schedule entirely.

What this means for players heading into September

August is essentially a warm-up lap for an even more loaded September, which brings Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Valheim's 1.0 launch on Switch 2, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and the Trails double drop. The key here is pacing yourself, because there is genuinely no quiet window between now and the end of the year.

For players jumping into any of these for the first time, the gaming guides hub has you covered on everything from build tips to mode breakdowns. If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is on your October radar after getting through August, the complete breakdown of all MW4 game modes is already live. And if you are a sports fan eyeing the rest of 2026, the EA Sports College Football 27 release date and start times guide has everything you need to plan your schedule around the drop.
