Opti Games, the developer behind the dynamic esports title Sparkball, has closed a $2 million funding round. The investment comes from L1D, CMS Holdings, Impossible Finance, Yield Guild Games (YGG), and other backers. The capital will support the game's development and upcoming launch phases. The announcement arrives shortly after Opti Games committed to building Sparkball natively on the Monad blockchain, a strategic move to integrate blockchain technology into the core gaming experience.
The Monad ecosystem participated in the round through contributions from the Monad angel group "Purple" and Monad CEO Keone Hon. "Not only am I thrilled to see Sparkball building on Monad, but I'm also personally excited to support their growth. The response from the Monad community after the first game night has been phenomenal, and we're all eager to cheer on Sparkball progress as they head into Season Zero and integrate the Monad Protocol," Hon said.

Nine years in the making
Sparkball started as a passion project nearly a decade ago under Opti Games founder Chandler Thomlison. What began as a small-scale effort has evolved into one of the more anticipated esports titles in development. The game blends League of Legends with Rocket League in a 4v4 "sport brawler" format that mixes action combat with strategic scoring. Players balance "brawlin'" (fighting) and "ballin'" (scoring goals) in fast-paced matches.
The $2 million raise represents a turning point for what the team calls "Sparkball 2.0." This phase marks the culmination of years of iteration and lessons learned. The funds will go toward refining gameplay, growing the player base, and rolling out new features.

Season Zero launches this month
The first major milestone following the funding is the launch of "Season Zero," a month-long campaign set to begin in late November. The event will introduce players globally to the game's updated features and competitive structure. Participants will compete for rewards and rankings within the Sparkball universe. The game launches initially on Steam, with a full release for PC and Xbox planned for Q3 2025.
Thomlison emphasized that the funding will expand both the game and its community. "As a passion-driven studio, we've always believed that true conviction is what makes good games great," he said. "This isn't just a $2M raise for Sparkball, it's the official beginning of a tight-knit village of incredible people and resources who possess that conviction to help make the Sparkball experience even more magical in Season Zero and beyond."

What makes Sparkball different
Sparkball's hybrid gameplay sets it apart. Two teams of four players each select heroes, engage in high-energy combat, and score goals against the opposing side. The mix of physical action and strategic play creates a multi-layered experience. Players need to master both combat mechanics and positioning to win. The team describes the style as "Kung Fu-tbol," a blend of martial arts intensity and sports competition.
Opti Games was founded by developers with backgrounds at Riot Games and Blizzard Entertainment, alongside indie game development experience. The studio focuses on creating "Golden Retriever" games—optimistic projects designed to leave players feeling energized rather than drained.
What comes next
With $2 million secured, Opti Games will expand Sparkball's reach and refine the game based on player feedback. Backing from both traditional investors and the Monad blockchain community signals growing interest in merging blockchain technology with mainstream gaming. Sparkball could become a notable entry in the web3 gaming space as a result.
As the studio prepares for Season Zero and the full 2025 launch, Sparkball positions itself as a serious contender in the esports scene. For updates, follow Sparkball on X at @playSparkball.
